Motorola DROID Bionic vs. Verizon iPhone 4

February 10th, 2011

The Apple iPhone 4 continues to be a leader in the wireless industry, capturing hearts and minds, while maintaining strong sales. Dozens of new phones have been introduced to knock the iPhone 4 off its pedestal, but Apple’s iconic cell phone remains the device to beat. The latest shot across the iPhone’s bow is the Motorola DROID Bionic, which continues the popular DROID line of Android phones on Verizon Wireless. The DROID Bionic has some excellent features, but how does it compare with the Apple iPhone 4?

Key Differences

  • Display: The Motorola DROID Bionic will have a 4.3-inch LCD display, while the Apple iPhone 4 measures in at 3.5 inches. Apple’s iPhone 4 leads the wireless industry with its 640 x 960-pixel resolution, a dot-pitch so fine that Apple refers to it as a “retina” display. At 540 x 960 pixels, the DROID Bionic is no slouch in the resolution department, and it’s larger screen may make long-term viewing (of a movie, for example) more comfortable on the DROID Bionic than the iPhone 4.
  • Operating system: The DROID Bionic will run Android 2.2, while the iPhone 4 is currently delivered with Apple’s iOS4.2 operating system. Apple has provided continuous upgrades to the iPhone’s operating system, and Motorola promises an upgrade to Android 2.3 by the end of 2011.
  • Processor and RAM: The Motorola DROID Bionic features a dual-core 1GHz processor, and will be among the first cell phones to run with a dual-core processor. The Apple iPhone 4 has an A8 single-core processor clocking in at 1GHz. Both phones feature 512MB of RAM.
  • Keyboard: Both the Motorola DROID Bionic and the Apple iPhone 4 have on-screen virtual QWERTY keyboards.
  • Storage Space: The Motorola DROID Bionic will ship with 16GB of onboard memory, and has a microSD slot that will accommodate memory cards up to 32GB. The Apple iPhone is available in either 16GB or 32GB models, but it does not have a memory card slot for expansion.
  • Camera: The Motorola DROID Bionic will have an 8-megapixel still-image camera, while the Apple iPhone 4 has a 5-megapixel camera. Both can record HD video at 720p resolution.
  • Battery life: The Motorola DROID Bionic will have a 1,930 mAh lithium-ion battery that is replaceable by the user. This is substantially larger than the batteries currently available in Android phones. The Apple iPhone has a built-in lithium-ion battery that is not user-replaceable.

  • I had the droid. Always wanted an iphone. Now I have the iphone. Text and emails are my problem with it. My droid, if you typed in a wh for example, it would give you a list of all the common words starting with wh and you clicked on the word you needed. After the word was selected, it would give you access to ,.?!’ So quick and simple. I haven’t found any kind of app for this on the ipnone. Does anyone know of one? I guess I got spoiled with the droid.

  • I work at a premium retailer for Verizon and run tests on all phones the bionic is unreal in speeds vs the iPhone just in 3g but when in 4g the iPhone cannot compare iPhone is a great phone but it is not the elite phone the 4s has caught up a lil iPhone didn’t drop the 5 because the technology is not there to blow people out of the water at this point 4s wad smart to do that cuz people would be so disapionted if that was the 5 FYI iPhone is the number one selling actual phone because that’s there only phone but drips as a whole nearly doubles in sales the 2 phones I get the most complaints are iphones and thunderbolts but bassically I can’t help u with ur iPhone can ruin ur warrenty plus FYI iphones do not support Adobe so millions of videos ur friends are watching and sharing u can not watch neways if u want the “elite” phone go with Droid bionic charge or the 3 through Verizon I own the incredible 2 and they have a video comparison to the iPhone on youtube and it wins in speed and picture quality and a larger screen fully customizable so yes I’m a Droid fan and next purchase will be the bionic and I am not an iPhone hater I do find them harder to use and find I cannot pirate as much apps on the iPhone so ur paying more money but I think iPhone are a sexier phone but need to bump up in size if they did that and were the elite phone I would go with the best all day they better make some moves fast cuz new andriods are coming out all the time getting better and better fee audio beats 8 mp camera 1080 recording led screens and voice recognition all things Apple does not have accept the camera and voice finally with the 4s I know I said a lot with no puncuation and auto text probably fucked up a lot of what I said but I hope it helped someone

If i text something, will the bionic phone speak for me?because i cant talk

    • James, yes, there are Android apps that can read texts for you. A free on is called Vlingo and you can see a demo of it here: Vlingo demo on YouTube. I think that’s what you’re looking for… hope it helps!

  • Only the iPhone 4GS will be released in October, not the iPhone 5 like people were thinking.

  • Only the iPhone 4GS is being released, not the iPhone 5 like everyone was thinking.

  • I just bought the Droid Bionic and I’m in love with it. I’ve had the iphkne and don’t really care for it. My Bionic is superfast and I can’t put it down. Apple USED to have the best phone out but theyre slowly getting passed by Android phones. With all the technology out nowadays itswhard for 1 phone to stay “the best” for a long time.

    • Hi Brian,

I had a look at it today and noticed that there is a small delay (drag really) when
navigating the apps list. I’ve always owned Moto droids and thought of going Iphone
      now. Are you experiencing that?

  • I Have the Iphone4 and it is nice. The Bionic is nice as well however it has been pushed back twice and that is why there was such a delay in its coming out. While the Bionic is a nice phone it is made by MOTOROLLA which makes crappy phones but great blue tooth devices. Apple is the world leader in technology no other consumer has been able to knock them out of the box in my opinion. I will say that I was never a true fan of the iphone at all because i felt like it was an ipod touch with capability to talk which i guess that is what it is lol. Any way still a better phone the Bionic is $299 with new 2yr contract while you can pay the same price for a 32 iphone. And for those of you that really believe that 4g is anywhere close to us you are mistaken. Either way the bottom line is by personal preference.

    • With all due respect, Motorola has been in the cell phone game since the beginning. Though the phone is a good phone, when you crunch the numbers, the iphone cannot compare. Dual-core processor, 1 gig of RAM, 1080 hd picture & video, bigger screen for easier viewing, plus utilizing the new google+ program. Not to mention the thousands of apps on the android market that are free! Also, 4g is VERY available in all the major metropolitan areas.

  • Will the bionic have the screen capture like the iPhone?

    • I believe that Android phones have a screen capture function similar to the iPhone. I don’t know it off the top of my head, but I recall it being demonstrated. That would include the Motorola DROID Bionic… whenever it is released.

You all forget that while all these other phones catch up apple will soon come out with an even better phone again. Thus the competitors will spend another few years trying to catch up again.

    • Well, “another few years” is a bit of an exaggeration. A couple of months is more like it. Meanwhile, Apple is working hard to catch up with the new phones that have been introduced in the year since the iPhone 4 was launched. Apple would also be smart to improve its variety, which is something that causes it to fall WAY behind Android phones. A 3.5-inch screen, no matter how excellent, is too small for people over 50. And some people prefer a physical keyboard that Apple has never had in its phones. Not to mention 4G phones and 3G phones… some people don’t need 4G but some people gotta have it. Apple will lose customers if it can’t meet that need for variety.

I for one think that iPhones stink. Sure, they may be faster then most of the phones on the market, but they don’t allow you to do a lot of the cool things that Droids do; such as, use mp3′s from your music selection, as ringtones/alarms. The fact that you can’t upgrade your memory sucks donkey D%#k as well. Pretty much the only way to get some features that Droids offer on an iPhone, is the jailbreak them & that’s just something I in general, like to avoid to my phones.

I have the original Motorola Droid & though there are times that I wouldn’t mind dropping it off of a cliff, for the most part, it is a great phone. I really like the Google Maps on Droids, as opposed to the Google Maps on iPhone; mostly coz it tends to freeze up on the iPhone & when I’m in a city I’m not familiar with, the last thing I need is to have to restart my phone in the middle of an expressway, with exits on both sides.

The Droid Bionic may not feature the ability to connect to a keyboard or to a laptop, but get real; most people these days don’t use their phones for that sort of thing anyways. Sure, maybe if we all worked on Wallstreet, but half the ppl I know that use smart phones, just sit on Facebook all day & occasionally send an email. Other then that, these new phones are just shiney paper weights.

My next phone will most likely be the Bionic, since its a great contender with the new iFail & it tends to take consumers in a newer, better direction, as opposed to the iPhones course of trying to polish a new design for an older relic & then call it something new.

    • You said the bionic want connect to laptop? So u want be able to transfer music from laptop to Phone ??

    • iOS5 dude. check it out cause im 100% sure you can make your ringtines for texts and youve always been able to make any soong on ur phone a ringtone. change the file from mp3 to m4r and ure good. takes 15 seconds

one of my staffers pooped on both phones, from a 4 foot free fall drop. SPLAT! It’s hard to tell from the initial tests, but both appear to remain intact and functional, showing minimal signs of smear and/or stain. Call quality suffered slightly more on the iPhone due to my staffers bullseye aim, dropping right on the speaker. But after some time in the sun and a wet wipe, you’d never know. It’s going to be a toss up when these two go head to head. Up next is the ice scraper test.

    • Really…you were able to get a prototype Bionic and slam it in to the pavement?

I’m not sure I believe you.

My iphone friend was telling me that both phones have 512mb of ram so they will operate at the same speed but dual core is like equipping your smart car with a Corvette engine. In other words my smart car will go faster than your smart car! The other thing is screen size. Why does Apple refuse to make a phone with a larger screen? Doesn’t make sense. I have the Droid X and my wife just got the HTC Thunderbolt, both having 4.3 inch screens. We will never go back to small screen phones again!

  • Verizon told me. The bionic is costing 500 dollars with the 2 year deal. Also fyi the unlimited

hotspots, is a. One month. Trial only after that it goes by kbs

The Bionic appears to be a real competitor to the IPhone 4. Many seem to believe that it will outsell and perform the the IPhone. You are all forgeting one main point. Nothing will outsell Apple’s IPhone. They are marketing gurus. Even though the world knows that they release their products roughly around the same time every single year. Fanboys line up still to get a product that should have been made for the year prior.

Too bad out of the gate Android 2.2 will not support dual-core… We’ll have to wait for Android 2.4 for that to happen…

    • Wrong, it’s a switch at compile time…”-j2″…that easy.

This comparo is weak BTW, they missed the most important feature of the Droid, the Tegra 2 GPU…BIONIC will positively dominate on 3D/OpenGL graphics over the fruity phone.

  • this phone (Motorola DROID Bionic) rocks… can’t wait to see it.. ♀♀♀

  • They Should wait for the iPhone 4G to compare these two, who knows what APPLE has in store for us!

    • Hmm I dunno the same thing they had 4 yeArs ago ..,,, real technology advances …… I phones dOnt…. If we waited to compare all we would c is an I phone 5 with a NEW APP !!!! NIt exiting

  • Actually the Verizon iPhone 4′s iOS 4.2.5 has a Personal mobile hotspot!

  • I also read the bionic features 512mb of ddr2 ram which as most know it has twice the clock speed. Not sure of iphone4

I’ve read the same thing about the RAM being DDR2. I’m curious as to why a lot of reviews only state it as being 512 RAM.

My 1st Gen Droid just died on me, well I kinda broke it LOL I’m eligible for an upgrade but I’m waiting on the Droid Bionic so I’m using a BlackBerry Storm in the meantime. Lemme tell you,…..It’s a WORLD of difference. I’m starting to get used to it, but I just want my Android back LOL

OMG, I feel SO sorry for you. Having to use a Crackberry! LOL I have been a Verizon customer for 12 years. You couldn’t PAY me to go to another carrier and I SWORE by all LG phones until I got the Motorola Droid. If I had waited til my actual upgrade date, I could’ve gotten a Droid X. Now I’m glad I still have the 1st gen Droid and am PATIENTLY awaiting the arrival of the Bionic. I saw that the HTC Thunderbolt is being offered with unlimited hotspot for $20 or $30 introductory. I’m hoping that they do the same with the Bionic. If it does, early upgrade, here I come!

  • Since it launch in 2007, Apple iPhone has been very good device. My opinion is that Droid Bionic phone will be very stiff competition to iPhone, if not better after all. The Bionic is amazing new phone with unsurpassed technology and features. It MAY easily outsell iPhone on the long run.I have HTC Incredible and that phone (compared to iPhone my friends have) is superior in some applications (ie. browser speed, running multiple applications etc.)but I DO HAVE ISSUE with battery life on HTC Incredible. I hope Motorola Droid Bionic will be better in battery life compartment. I also like unlimited potential of android programs (which most are free) and ease of use. Thanks

    • The current 3G droids are better then the iPhone ?? And it won’t be hard to he the I Phone at all ….. I phone should be advertised for old people who need a simple Ass phone that does the same thing it did 4 years ago…. Android is a much more advanced os

  • The biggest issue is that the iPhone 4 will be available on Verizon in just a week or so….no word on when Bionic will be available. I had decided I wanted the Bionic, but if it’s not available til July, I doubt I’ll wait. Ridiculous to reveal a phone and it not be available for another 5 months. I hope those projections are wrong and it’s here in March.

    • The iphone 4 will not be able to run on the new 4G network as the Bionic will. Its worth the wait.

Bionic has gone from 2Q11 release to “Coming Soon”. I have seen reports of it coming out in April, so not much longer, at all.

yeaaa its June now. still no Bionic. And i dont want an iphone simply becouse everyone has it, And they show no signs of evolution or foward progresion. With the finances availible and with the tech team they have i would think the would be a real “game changer”. Now where awaiting the iphone 5. And im hearing September.

  • Also, the Bionic will offer mobile hotspot.

    • Not that I like the I phone at all …. But the I phone has a mobile hotspot….. They say it doest in those specs up top but that’s incorrect….. The I phones hot spot is much Like the droid x’s hotspot

  • You’re omitting the detail that the Bionic features HDMI output, enabling you to watch video on your HD television.

    • That is certainly a feature of the DROID Bionic that the iPhone 4 does not have. Thanks for pointing it out!
