BlackBerry Torch 9800

Faced with ever mounting competition from Google’s booming Android OS and still suffering from a several year case of iPhone browser envy, the RIM team has been hard at work on not only an entirely new bake of its increasingly stale operating system, but the touchscreen toting, slide-out QWERTY boasting BlackBerry Torch 9800. The next-gen BlackBerry has already made its big debut on AT&T’s website and is slated for official announcement later today in New York.

The BlackBerry Torch 9800 will sport a sliding form factor, four-line QWERTY keyboard, a 3.2-inch 480×360 pixel touchscreen, 5-megapixel autofocus camera with flash, 802.11n support, 4GB of on-board storage space along with an included 4G microSD card, and 512MB of RAM. Of course, the Torch will be powered by RIM’s all-new BlackBerry OS 6 complete with an updated user interface and entirely new WebKit-based browser.

The much-improved BlackBerry browsing experience will more closely resemble that of the iPhone and latest Android devices, and will offer tabbed browsing and pinch-to-zoom support. The new OS will also feature an updated media interface, social networking integration, a revamped homescreen, and new universal search function.

Accompanied by a comprehensive tech spec rundown and some tempting photos, AT&T’s BlackBerry Torch teaser page offers an email address sign up so you can be notified the moment RIM’s new smartphone play is available.

The Torch 9800 is now available for the low Wirefly price of $99.99.
