Verizon Wireless customers with Total Equipment Coverage can sleep a little easier tonight. A new service provided free to customers of the wireless carrier’s equipment insurance plan will enable users to locate, lock and even remotely wipe a lost phone.
The Mobile Recovery service, similar to Apple’s subscription-based MobileMe service, is comprised of a web and phone-based application. Users can log into Verizon Wireless’ Mobile Recovery portal and locate a lost device using GPS, provided the phone is on and in a Verizon Wireless service area. The tool will also allow users to remotely have a lost device sound an alarm, lock a device to prevent unauthorized use, and wipe data including text messages and stored contacts.
If Total Equipment Coverage customers are unable to locate their device using the Mobile Recovery application, they can proceed to file a claim and receive next-day delivery of a replacement device. Any contacts, settings and applications on the lost device can be restored to the replacement using Verizon’s Backup Assistant.
