Yesterday at Mobile World Congress 2010 in Barcelona, Spain Microsoft revealed Windows Phones 7 Series, the anticipated and wholly overhauled update to Microsoft’s perennial mobile operating system. Unrecognizable from previous versions of Windows Mobile, Windows Phone 7 boasts a range of improvements in a finger-friendly, sleek and supremely simple interface.

Here’s a brief rundown of what Microsoft’s latest has to offer, as well as video detailing the simple elegance of Windows Phone 7.

  • Windows Phone 7 Series is built from the ground up, delivering a brand new mobile operating system almost completely changed from its Windows Mobile ancestry.
  • The OS loves to be touched, and is designed to be operated with nothing more than a finger.
  • Windows Phone 7 Series devices will have start, search, and back buttons.
  • Multitouch will be supported.
  • The OS is described as “authentically digital,” and takes a noticeable departure from other smartphone operating systems with clean lines, simplistic graphics, and large text menus along with “live tiles” in place of on-screen buttons.
  • The mobile OS will have aesthetically similar “hubs” that merge similar content together. There will be a people, pictures, games, music & video, marketplace, and Office hub.
  • Social networking is front and center on the OS, with integrated views that display a feed of updates from multiple social networking sites with the capability to drill deeper to view content including photo galleries.
  • Windows Phone 7 Series devices will feature Xbox LIVE integration, with multi-player games, 3D avatars, and gamer profiles.
  • Zune integration will be standard, allowing for synchronization with a PC’s music library, support for online music services, and FM radio.
  • Devices running Windows Phone 7 will are expected to hit major U.S. carrier late this year, and will be manufactured by many of the usual heavyweights.
