AT&T has announced new unlimited cell phone plans that bring mixed news depending on which service tier you're currently paying for. According to Phone Scoop, the carrier is revamping its three main unlimited plan options with different outcomes for each group of customers. The changes took effect recently and give families the freedom to mix-and-match different plan levels while still getting the multi-line discount that typically applies only when everyone picks the same plan.
For customers watching their wallets, the lowest-tier plan called Value 2.0 is the big winner. You'll pay just $30 a month per line when you bundle four lines, or $50 for a single line. That's a noticeable drop from the old pricing of $36 to $66. The improvement doesn't stop at price: AT&T added 5 GB of fast data that wasn't included before. The downside is a reduction in hotspot data, dropping from 5 GB to 3 GB, which matters if you use your phone as a mobile Wi-Fi hotspot for tablets or laptops.
The middle-tier Extra 2.0 plan offers better value too, though the savings are smaller. You'll save a few dollars monthly compared to what you paid before, with prices ranging from $40 to $70 depending on how many lines you add. The good news here is substantial: your fast internet data nearly doubled from 75 GB to 100 GB, and your hotspot allowance jumped from 30 GB to 50 GB. This plan seems designed for people who stream videos and constantly share Wi-Fi with other devices.
The premium tier tells a different story. AT&T's top-end Premium 2.0 plan is getting more expensive, with a $4 monthly increase regardless of how many lines you have. If you have two lines, you're looking at paying $80 instead of $76. The tradeoff is that your hotspot data has doubled from 60 GB to 100 GB. Otherwise, the plan remains the same with truly unlimited fast speeds, high-definition video streaming, and coverage in 20 Latin American countries.
The real advantage of this restructuring is flexibility. Unlike before, you don't need all four family members on the same plan level. One person could choose Premium while three others pick Extra or Value, and each plan tier still gets its multi-line discount. That means households with different data needs can save money by customizing their service.
