Earlier this week, the three major wireless operators in the country reported their earnings for Q2 2021. Collectively, the three were able to add almost 1.5 million postpaid phone subscribers during the quarter. But how did their competition from cable MVNOs do during the quarter? Not too bad, it seems.
According to a report, the three cable MVNOs were able to add 550,000 mobile subscribers collectively throughout the period. This number stems from a 13.4% increase from the 485,000 customers that were added in Q2 2020.
Here is a brief look at how well cable MVNOs performed during Q2 2021.
Comcast’s Xfinity Mobile leads the group with the highest customer additions, total customer count, and revenue.
During the quarter, the MVNO was able to gain 280,000 mobile net additions; which is an increase from the 126,000 additions it had in the same quarter from a year ago. This marks as the best quarterly result of the MVNO. Xfinity Mobile ends Q2 2021 with a total of 3.383 million mobile customers instead of the 2.393 million it had in Q2 2020.
Their wireless revenue also rose 70.4% year-on-year to $556 million. Last year, they only earned $326 million.
Analysts believe that the growth of Xfinity’s numbers comes from their introduction of a multi-line discount.
Next up is Charter Communications’ Spectrum Mobile MVNO business. The MVNO reported adding 265,000 mobile lines during the quarter, 15,000 of which are business lines. This is a slight reduction from the 325,000 net add they had in Q2 2020. The MVNO closed the quarter with 2.94 million wireless lines, which is an increase from the 1.69 million lines from a year ago.
The MVNO’s mobile revenue also rose 67.5% year-on-year to $519 million. It was $310 million last year.
Finally, Altice USA’s Altice Mobile was able to add 5,000 mobile lines during the quarter. In the previous year, the MVNO had 34,000 net additions. Despite going down, the MVNO ended the quarter with 180,000 mobile lines, an increase from the 144,000 from last year.
As for mobile revenue, the MVNO reported a 4% increase of $20.7 million from last year’s $19.9 million.
