The FCC has conditionally approved separate deals that let AT&T and SpaceX acquire spectrum from EchoStar, a move that could improve wireless coverage on the ground and strengthen satellite-to-phone service in weak-signal areas. For regular customers, the biggest takeaway is simple: more usable airwaves could mean better service, especially in rural and underserved places.
As reported by PhoneArena, AT&T will receive 20 MHz of 600 MHz low-band spectrum and 30 MHz of 3.45 GHz mid-band spectrum from EchoStar. The source says those licenses cover 99% of the U.S. population.
AT&T plans to use the added spectrum to expand its 5G and home internet footprint, with a particular focus on rural, remote, and underserved areas. The deal also includes a deeper network arrangement with Boost Mobile, allowing the carrier to lean more on AT&T’s infrastructure.
SpaceX, meanwhile, is set to receive 65 MHz of mid-band spectrum for its next-generation direct-to-device service. According to the source, that package includes 40 MHz of AWS-4, 10 MHz of AWS-H Block, and 15 MHz of unpaired AWS-3 spectrum. The FCC is allowing SpaceX to use those licenses for terrestrial, satellite-based, or hybrid networks, which could help improve text, voice, and data performance in dead zones.
The approvals come with a condition: EchoStar must create a $2.4 billion escrow fund to cover possible claims. The FCC sees these transactions as a way to put underused spectrum to work more quickly. For consumers, that makes this less about regulatory paperwork and more about whether their phone works better where coverage still falls short.
