Google is preparing an Android upgrade that could make missed internet calls much easier to manage. Instead of jumping between apps, users may soon see calls from services like WhatsApp and Telegram directly inside the main phone app’s call history, right next to regular cellular calls.
According to Android Authority, the feature is coming to phones running Android 16.1 and newer. It will let third-party VoIP apps register their calls with Android’s telecom system, so those calls can appear in dialer apps such as Phone by Google. Users will also be able to call back from the dialer itself, with Android sending the call through the correct app automatically.
That would solve a common annoyance for Android users. Right now, if you miss a WhatsApp call, for example, you usually have to reopen WhatsApp to find the call and respond. With this change, the process becomes much more like a normal phone call, which should make Android feel simpler for people who use several calling apps.
The feature has already been seen on a Pixel 9 running the latest Android Canary build. In the Phone by Google app, a Calling Accounts settings page shows which third-party apps can display call logs, and users can turn that option off for each app individually.
There is also a privacy angle. The report notes that Android 16 QPR2 previously introduced support for VoIP apps to hide certain internet calls from the system call log. Even so, users may not notice any changes right away, because third-party app developers still need to add support before the feature rolls out widely.
