In a move that's been flying under the radar, Selectel Wireless is steadily growing its presence across the United States. Known for offering affordable, no-contract cell phone plans, the company is now focusing on expanding its physical retail footprint.
According to a recent report by BestMVNO, Selectel Wireless has increased its number of corporate stores from 65 in early March to 70 by May 2025. This growth comes after the company acquired several independent wireless dealers and repair shops in September 2024.
Selectel Wireless, which operates on Verizon's network, has been in business since 2008 and is headquartered in Fremont, Nebraska. Unlike many mobile virtual network operators (MVNOs) that focus on online sales, Selectel is investing in brick-and-mortar stores, particularly in rural areas.
Jeff Moore, Principal of Wave7 Research, noted, "I think Selectel Wireless zigs, while others zag. Few MVNOs, Consumer Cellular aside, open up their own stores. Also, most prepaid MVNOs are focused on urban markets, while Selectel is largely focused on rural markets."
This strategy sets Selectel apart from competitors like Consumer Cellular and AirVoice Wireless. While Consumer Cellular is building new, uniform retail spaces, and AirVoice's expansion has slowed, Selectel is growing by acquiring existing dealers, allowing for faster and more cost-effective expansion.
