Earlier today, the company revealed that they will be making Rich Communication Services (RCS) available to its customers. This announcement comes after its two rivals revealed that they will be implementing Google’s SMS replacement tool.
According to Verizon’s announcement, existing subscribers who use Verizon’s Message+ app will get to enjoy full access to the RCS suite before the year ends. This app includes all the features of RCS, such as real-time typing indicators and read receipts.
In addition to this goal, Verizon aims to have all of its company-released devices available with Messages by Google app preinstalled. This will allow its customers to enjoy the features of RCS, such as end-to-end encryption for one-on-one conversations along with the ability to send full-resolution photos.
Today’s announcement marks a significant milestone for Google. For years, the tech giant has been pushing for RCS to become a standard. And while it may have seemed like a failure for some time, Google kept pushing forward and improving the app.
Once Verizon fully adapts RCS as a standard, it will leave Apple as the odd one out. This is because Google does not have any plans to release an iOS version of RCS any time soon. But an invite to use RCS had already been sent to Apple.
