Verizon has unveiled a suite of behind-the-scenes upgrades aimed at bolstering network resilience during natural disasters, ensuring that customers remain connected when it matters most.
The telecommunications giant has fortified its infrastructure by equipping every macro cell site with battery backups and maintaining a fleet of over 1,000 mobile generators on standby. Additionally, Verizon has implemented backup power solutions at critical facilities and established multiple fiber routes to sustain service continuity during emergencies.
In collaboration with startup Hyfi, Verizon is deploying flood sensors that leverage its network to disseminate real-time flood warnings, aiding communities in proactive disaster response.
Verizon's crisis response fleet, comprising nearly 3,000 deployable assets—including mobile cell towers and drone units for damage assessments—is ready to be dispatched to affected areas. A dedicated team of engineers and technicians remains on call year-round, supported by a Global Event Management Center that monitors weather and other threats 24/7.
Customers can monitor network status during emergencies through Verizon's Check Network Status tool or the My Verizon app.
These initiatives underscore Verizon's commitment to maintaining reliable connectivity, particularly during times of crisis.
