Earlier today, it announced that its mmWave 5G network has broken data barrier speeds by achieving 5.06Gbps.
This data speed was achieved with Verizon’s partnership with Qualcomm and Ericsson, and of course, a lab setting with the right equipment. The speed test was conducted in a lab with 800MHz bandwidth in 28GHz mmWave spectrum plus 40MHz for the 4G LTE anchor. To boost speeds, Verizon made use of carrier aggregation, which fuses various channels of spectrum.
The 5G infrastructure equipment used for the test include Ericsson’s Radio System and a 5G smartphone test device equipped with Qualcomm Snapdragon’s X60 5G Modem-RF system. This test device comes with third generation Qualcomm QTM535 mmWave antenna modules.
Although Verizon does not have the broadest nationwide 5G coverage for its mmWave 5G network compared to T-Mobile, today’s announcement is still a worthwhile accomplishment for the wireless provider. Previously, Verizon’s 5G speed record was 1.8Gbps with the Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra and Nokia equipment.
“When fully mature, 5G technology has the potential of reaching speeds up to 10 Gbps, latency under 5 milliseconds, and service deployment times of 90 minutes. It will enable mobile connections to happen at up to 500 km/h with the ability to manage over a million devices per km2 and data volumes of 10 Tb/s/km2. Verizon and its collaborators are driving hard to maximize the potential of this developing technology.”
