In today's world, very few people are actually using landlines anymore. The prevalence of telemarketers and the lack of mobility that so many people seek makes cell phones a much more attractive option.
Can Two Cell Phones Share the Same Phone Number?
Is it possible to have two phones that share the same number? Can two cell phones have the same phone number? The short answer is "no."
Cell phone carriers will not activate the same number on two different phones for security and privacy reasons; for instance, what would happen if the second person lost their phone and every phone conversation was heard by a stranger?
Still, there are a few workarounds to "share" a communication channel on a cell phone, as long as the person doesn't mind a little extra effort.
Primary Phone Number
As stated above, it's impossible to get two phones with the same phone line. Even if someone signs up with a different carrier, the company will forward the new number to a new phone and cancel the activation on the old one, making only one number active at any one point in time.
One possible solution to this is to sign up for a Google Voice Account, but this service only applies to Sprint customers. A Google Voice Account allows someone to create an account with the same number that rings whenever the primary number is called, so either party can answer it.
Another option to keep the same phone number across two different phones is to forward the phone calls from one number to another. Once you forward a number, however, the second phone will begin to receive the phone calls bu the first one won't, so it's not a permanent solution. Still, if one party is away and the second party will need to be the one that answers the phone, it's a fantastic short-term or temporary solution.
Instead of forwarding, why not try an app? Applications like Skype Premium, Google Voice, and TextPlus use Wi-Fi or mobile data and will update the user on texts and calls through the application itself. Though someone won't be able to technically "share" a number, it will give two people the ability to share a common communication channel if necessary.
Every phone number is tied to a specific SIM card that is plugged into a phone, acting as the central database of the actual phone. Contact lists, applications, and other data are stored on to the SIM card, making it absolutely indispensable if someone wants to preserve their data. While removing a SIM card and swapping it out with a different phone is not nearly as easy as it used to be with older flip-style phones, it can still be done on iPhone and Android devices. It may not be very easy, but if two people absolutely need to share a phone number on two devices, it can still be serviceable.
