By default, people you message with on iPhone can see when you've read their messages. Since Read Receipts are turned on by default until they are turned off, people can see a little "Read" notification next to the iMessages they send you if you've actually read their message, and vice versa, and what time it was read.
Needless to say, a lot of people would prefer to have Read Receipts on iPhone turned off. Luckily, it's a pretty simple process.
How To Turn Off Read Receipts On iPhone
Open Settings then go to Messages
Toggle the switch for Send Read Receipts (so that no green is showing)
Now that Read Receipts are turned off, people who send iMessages to you will only see that the message has been delivered, but not whether you have read it or not. Of course, if you change your mind it's easy to turn Read Receipts back on.
It's also important to note that Read Receipts only concerns iMessage, and not regular text messages. So it only works with those blue colored text messages, rather than the green colored ones you would see if you were texting someone that owned an Android, for example.
