Wirefly has the phone I want for a much better price than anywhere else, what’s the catch? Is Wirefly a scam? How can Wirefly offer so many phones for free? Can I trust Wirefly? Is Wirefly a reputable and safe site to buy cell phones from?

We’re happy that you are doing your homework and taking the time to ask yourself these questions before you buy. You’ve been taught that if something sounds too good to be true, chances are it usually is. Well, in our case, offering unbeatable deals on cell phones is our business — and it’s how we make money. Our business is simple. The major carriers (AT&T, Verizon Wireless, T-Mobile, Sprint) pay Wirefly a commission to help them acquire new customers, or renew existing customer’s contracts, without taking up the time of in-store store employees.

THE CATCH? It’s really simple, actually. You simply need to maintain the carrier contract you agree to for 181 days after your order. The long version of that is:

When you sign up for wireless carrier service through Wirefly, we discount your phone purchase price by an Equipment Discount amount ranging from $200 to $300. By ordering through Wirefly, you agree to repay this discount if, during the 181 days after your new equipment is activated, if you:

* Fail to pay your balance due to your carrier each month
* Disconnect this line of service
* Transfer this equipment to another line of service
* Change your carrier service rate plan to a lower monthly service rate plan
* Deactivate the email/data feature if one was required at the point of purchase
* Transfer/port an existing phone number from another account if this is a new line of service
* Replace an existing account with this account if this is a new line of service
* Return or exchange your phone and it is not in its original, new condition with no more than 30 minutes of usage

If you break any of these contract provisions, except as a result of a documented service quality issue related to the carrier service, you authorize us to charge your credit card in repayment of the Equipment Discount.

Unfortunately, the world of cell phone contracts can be confusing, and confusion can lead to complaints – even accusations that we are running some kind of a scam – particularly when the deals seem too good to be true.

Any confusion is usually related to one of the following:

Credit approval. After we take your order for a new account, we must get approval from the carrier before your phone can be activated and shipped. If you have insufficient credit history, the carrier may reject the order, or ask us to collect additional information. We try to make this clear, but when the carrier rejects the order, the blame sometimes falls on us.

Deposits. Sometimes, based on a credit check, the carrier will approve the order only if we collect a deposit from the customer. Of course, we would rather not have to ask for a deposit. When we do, sometimes we are accused of “bait and switch” tactics.

Upgrade eligibility. We offer upgrades that let current customers get a discount on a new phone when they renew their contracts, provided that they are eligible for an upgrade at the time of order. Sometimes, although the customer is able to place the order on our site, the carrier will report that the customer is not yet eligible for an upgrade. In this case, we will cancel your order and attempt to notify you that you were not yet upgrade-eligible. Of course, you will not be billed for the purchase.

Rebates. Cell phone rebates can be confusing and most people don’t like them. That’s why Wirefly has not offered rebates on any products since 2007. We don’t even offer rebates from the carriers. All of our prices are simple and straightforward. The price you see is the price you pay with no need to wait for a rebate.

The equipment discount. The cell phone that we offer free or at a significant discount may have cost Wirefly several hundred dollars or more. Since we are only able to offer you such great equipment discounts because of our commission-based business model, when you order from Wirefly you agree to be charged the phone’s full cost if the carrier reports to us that you broke your cell phone contract, or if you return a phone and it’s been damaged in some way. This protects both Wirefly and the carriers from fraud, and allows us to continue to offer the great deals we are known for.

    I am a current Sprint customer and I get a monthly 20% discount because I am employed by a major employer. If I switch to Wirefly and stay with Sprint, do I still get to keep my monthly plan discount? Thanks!

    • Scott, if you are eligible for a new phone and order through Wirefly, you can get it and keep your employer discount. After you receive your new phone, contact Sprint to make sure that your discount is applied to the new phone. This is a regular thing for Wirefly and the carriers, and you will get to keep your discount.

  • My phone is no longer working. Both a representative from Verizon and my plan state that I’m currently eligible for an upgrade but it does not seem to be reflected on your site. I’m interested in getting a new phone, what should I do?

    • KF, I suggest that you call Wirefly and speak to a sales agent. There are circumstances where a carrier (Verizon in this case) will consider you eligible for an upgrade but only if you go directly through the carrier. This could be one of those circumstances, and the agent will be able to advise you once we have all the facts. The number to call is 800-552-9000.

    What if I want to add insurance through the carrier, would wirefly count that as a change in service and charge my card? Or would that count as adding service so they would not?

    • Michele, adding insurance is not considered a change in service. However, if you get the MDPA device protection through Wirefly, you will immediately be charged for it. If you get insurance through your carrier, you will get a monthly charge in your phone bill.

      Keep in mind that you have 30 days after purchasing a phone to buy MDPA or carrier insurance. After 30 days, it’s not available.

    In one of the posts it mentioned a $60.00 deposit. I have also read about being careful of hidden charges through wirefly. I am considering Wirefly but I am nervous. If I am ready for an upgrade does that mean the insurance I purchase is not good with a new 2 year plan?

    • Bridget, thanks for considering Wirefly. I just checked and Wirefly has no deposits or up-front costs for the phones we sell. And the MDPA device protection we sell is always available on a new phone purchased through Wirefly, or you can opt out of that and get insurance through the carrier.

      Here’s what I suggest: Go though the process of chosing your phone through Wirefly and go right up to the final purchase page. Look at all the costs on that page before you authorize the purchase – all the costs and charges will be on that page and there is nothing hidden. If something doesn’t look right, simply cancel at that point and nothing will be charged to you. If you decide to buy at that point, you have 30 days to cancel the deal without a penalty, and Wirefly will give you postage-paid return shipping labels.

      I agree that it’s sometimes scary to buy on the Internet. Wirefly has a 30-day satisfaction guaranty – if you don’t like the deal or the phones in 30 days, you get all your money back. We’re betting you’ll agree that it’s the best deal around.

  • so if you do not pay your bill within your contract they automatically charge your credit card? or do they just cut the service off?

    • Maniah, I think it depends on the circumstances. Wirefly checks carefully to make sure you have enough credit to cover the first 181 days, and your credit card may be automatically charged during that time. However, we all know circumstances can change and service may be cut off if payment is not made.

    • Yes, your interpretation is correct. If you get a phone through Wirefly, you can’t make any changes to your agreement for 181 days. Of course, Wirefly has a 30-day satisfaction guaranty, so you can exchange/return your phone within 30 days with no penalty. Once you are past 30 days, you can’t change the contract until you reach 181 days, wth the exception of adding more lines.

    Does wirefly offer insurance / warranty if a phone gets damaged or broken?

    • Wirefly sells a device protection plan called MDPA that will replace a phone if it is damaged, broken and a few other events. It does not cover a phone that has water damage or suffers a mysterious loss. (One example would be a phone that falls off a boat into the ocean and is lost — that is not covered.) You can also get insurance from the carrier, as long as you do it within 30 days of purchasing the phone.

    im confused i really want a free cell phone that doesnt charge me anything…will Wirefly charge me?

    • Wirefly has lots of cell phones that are given away if you get a two-year contract for cellular service. The phone will be free, but you will have to pay a monthly fee for the service. The monthly service charge will be the same whether you get a phone from Wirefly or from one of the major carriers, and Wirefly has a larger selection of free phones than any of the carriers.

  • I understand having to keep a phone on a line for a certain amount of time, but I don’t understand why I can’t upgrade a line and put the new phone on another line that’s on the same family plan.

    Why do you need a credit check for an upgrade on an account that was opened a year ago? What if your credit became worse after the one year, will Verizon still approve??

  • Hey there, Bob. I recently ordered phones here on Wirefly. I was quite happy to see that you had HTC phones listed here, and for free at that! I started the Family Plan, 3 phones – 1500 minutes, unlimited data, you know that whole deal through Sprint. I watched your reviews on Youtube, and was totally reassured that this was a safe, and legit site. I called your cusmtomer serivce line to confirm my order, and I was charged the $60 deposite per phone, which didn’t bother me at all, considering I’m only just stating establishing my credit. Your customer service reps. are nice a polite, not rude at all. Although, they couldn’t give me much insight on why I was not approved for a 3rd phone. I have been a loyal Verizon Wireless customer for a long while now, I maintain four phones on that plan, and I just decided they didn’t offer enough for the money, so I went with Sprint.I’m just wondering if I would have to go through Sprint to figure out why I wasn’t approved, can I add another line through this site at some point? Also, I paid the deposits, do you know when my order will ship? I really hope to continue doing business with Wirefly. I guess I just would rather hear it from you yourself.       As for the reason why you can’t immediately have all three lines on Sprint, I don’t know for sure. Sprint approved only two lines, with a $50 deposit, probably because your credit is still being established. I think that once you get some experience with Sprint in the next few months, Sprint will allow for more lines. However, you should discuss it with Sprint to be certain. Once you’re able to add another line, you can most definitely do that with Wirefly using our site. As for the two lines/phones that were approved, they will ship today (June 30).

  • What is the instant discount at Wirefly? Is it a mailin rebate or an immediate discount so the discounted price is the price I pay now?

    • We say that Wirefly has an “instant discount” because you pay a lower price up-front than you do at one of the carriers’ stores. For example, an HTC ThunderBolt is much less expensive to buy from Wirefly than it is at a Verizon store. That is the “instant discount.” Wirefly does not have rebates and you do not have to mail in anything to get Wirefly’s low prices.

    • I want to make sure I have all the info i need before going thru wirefly.com. Except from purchasing the phone thru wirefly, all support for the phone comes from Verizon? If there is a problem with the phone within the first 30 days, I must go through wirefly or can I go to Verizon? After the 30 days, all problems with the phone would be handled through Verizon? The phone still carries the manufacturer’s 1 yr warranty correct? So if I have a problem with the phone after the first 30 days, Verizon would handle it like they normally would as if purchased directly through them? If I have any sort of technical problems (not physical phone problems) starting day1….I would just go to Verizon? The only other contact with wirefly.com besides the actual purchase is if there is a problem with the phone within the first 30 days. All other issues are handled by Verizon as if I purchased the phone directly from the carrier directly? Am i treated any differently by Verizon because I purchased a phone through wirefly.com?

        If you have a problem with the phone in the first 30 days, you should call or contact Wirefly’s customer service. Wirefly may decide to send you a new phone, depending on the situation. Otherwise, all questions or issues about phone service should go to Verizon. After buying the phone from Wirefly, all monthly payments are made to Verizon. As far as Verizon is concerned, you are their customer and they are responsible for your service. After 30 days, you can take your phone to any Verizon store to discuss any issues or problems you might have with the phone itself. I can’t guaranty that problems will be fixed on the spot, but you will be treated like any other Verizon customer… since that’s what you are.

        i tried to purchase i sony experia play from wire fly my order was canceled some how, after it said complete, and i got an email saying complete i had an order number, but it says its canceled i would like to make this purchase if i know its legitimate not a scam ive been charged already once, but, i would like to buy the experia play

  • Wirefly is a scam! I purchased phones in 2005, the deal to cost me initially 389.99, and I was to receive rebates of $200 180 days later. Instead they hit my credit card for $574.98 and never gave me a rebate. They avoided doing anything via customer service, and it all ended up in a class action law suite, which fell apart after the lawyers learned they would not get any money. Don’t buy from them.

    • Rich, 2005 is a long time ago on the Internet. Wirefly is today under completely different ownership and management, and the company offers deep discounts on phones up front. There have not been rebates on Wirefly in several years – consumers get their savings right away. Anybody who buys from Wirefly gets the company’s 30-day satisfaction guaranty: If you are not satisfied with the phone or the deal, send it back and your money will be refunded. And Wirefly pays the return shipping.

      If you can find a better deal, you should take it.

    • Alex, thanks for choosing Wirefly! When you get a phone from Wirefly, you pay the bill to the carrier, not to Wirefly. You pay the monthly bill in exactly the same way you would if you had bought the phone from the carrier. For example, if the phone is on Verizon, you simply pay the monthly bill to Verizon.

      With respect to your upgrade question, it’s hard to say without knowing more details. Please call 800-552-9000 and give your account details to the agent. S/he should be able to figure it out and give you the right answer.

    • Lisa, I’m not exactly sure what you are trying to do, so it’s tough to give you a knowledgable answer. I assume you’re talking about buying a phone… could you back up a step and discuss what phone you want?

      Once you get a phone from Wirefly, you have a 30-day satisfaction guaranty. If you’re not happy with the phone within 30 days, simply return it using the return label that we will include — there’s no cost to you for the return shipping. If the phone has been damaged in the shipment to you, you will need to file a claim with the shipper — once that gets done, Wirefly will work with you to make sure you get a working phone promptly.

      Once you order a phone from Wirefly, you make monthly payments to the carrier (Sprint, Verizon, T-Mobile) just as you would normally. Wirefly is no longer in the picture at that point — Wirefly’s role is to supply you a phone and sign you up for a contract (or extension of an existing contract). Without knowing the details, it’s hard to say more about this.

      Finally, if you order using a credit card (which is highly recommended), you can always contest the charges if there is a problem with the deal. I have done this myself with various vendors (not Wirefly) over the years and it is a fantastic recourse for consumers.

    I understand all of it but, i have 5 lines and only 2 are available for upgrade and if I upgrade the 2 can I use one of the phones for one of the other lines? for example: my sons line is ready for upgrade and so is mine, but I want to use my sons upgrade to get my husband a new phone is that ok? and why is it that when I go to upgrade it gives me rate of $99.00 for a family plan? is that changing 2?

    • Nataly, if you bought your phone more than 30 days ago, you’ll need to take your phone to one of the carrier’s stores. Take your old phone with you and perhaps they can swap you back to the old phone. If your phone is less than 30 days old, then it’s covered by Wirefly’s 30-day satisfaction guarantee.     Why doesn’t wirefly offer At&t phones?

  • If I currently get a discount of 15% with att or 20% with verizon because of my employer, will I be able to retain any discount if I purchase through wirefly?

  • If I get a company discount of 25% through Verizon is it still possible for me to save on buying a phone through Wirefly and receive that same discount on my plan. I currently have a Verizon account set up which is eligible for a new Droid 2 Global for $200, but your price is $150 cheaper and I would like to take advantage of that but only if I can maintain my 25% discount.

    • I do not work for Wirefly. If you are not changing your plan you should be fine. If your plan is no longer offered by Verizon then you will have to upgrade to a new plan. The discount will still apply even if the plan changes.

  • I’m currently a Verizon customer and want to order my upgraded smartphones through wirefly…however, the lowest data plan I can find on this site for Verizon is $29.99. Directly through Verizon, though, I can get a data plan for $9.99. Anyway to get both my phones through Wirefly AND the $9.99 data plan?

    • Unfortunately you cannot get the cheap phone and the lower data rate. You also cannot change your plan for 181 days if you get it through Wirefly.

  • Wirefly is great! I always go to their site to get the latest phone for free. I like my carrier so agreeing to another 2 year contract is no problem.

  • this is not a good offer/ its best that you buy the phone from the carrier… because that will support with the device. yea this phone or cheap… but the bottom line is that you going to end up paying more some how.

    • I think it’s a great offer. I just switch over from ATT to Verizon and the transition couldn’t be smoother. I followed their rules and have not had a single problem or complaint… You pick your monthly payment choices so how are you going to be paying more??? Can’t wait for my new Droid X tomorrow!!!

      P.S. order through ebates.com and I got 35 bucks cash back, THEN I’m going through Verizon’s friend referral program for 25 bucks cash back. Ultimately I’m getting paid 10 bucks for my Droid X! :D

  • Just one quick question, My family ATT plan is eligible for an upgrade, and i want to upgrade through Wirefly. My ATT family plan has some custom features that i removed and added on ATT’s site. Is there any way to upgrade my phones whilst keeping that same plan configuration? or Will i have to go through the 700 mins plan that it offers and then go back to ATTs website and configure it all again. This is my first time so im just trying to be careful about it.

  • What happens if you wish to upgrade to a new phone (keeping my same plan) with my present carrier through Wirefly, Wirefly will sell me the same phone for half the price that my carrier is offering it to me for. Turns out I am not yet eligible for a full upgrade diuscount from my carrier. Will Wirefly have to come back to me for some sort of price increase after my carrier informs them of my lack of full discount eligibility? I am just baffled on that aspect of the transaction.     • After placing your order, Wirefly will check with your provider as to what you are eligible for and get back to you immediately by email if things don’t jive. They will cancel the order and not send it to you. This happened to me in the last couple of days. I rectified the glitch and reinstated my order with Wirefly.

  • Hi, I was looking to get a DROID on here but it shows the monthly pay is 9.99 but at Verizon it’s 29.99. IS it the same here as it is on Verizon?

    hey I really need a cell phone i am looking for a LG NEON but it is to much $$$$$$$$$ so i was thanking u have one cheaper the other one was $$$$$120.00 dollers. and i need a plan that doesn’t cost like a 100 dollers a month or somthing.

      walmart sells them for 78.00 and you can use any carrier that has the little obolong chip in the back, i.e ATT, Verizon, and the such.

  • I have a contract with 4 phones with ATT. Would I be able to to start up a new contract under a family members name and still keep the same number? Is it necessary to have a PTT option on some phones if we dont use it if so can we disable it? Thanks Ric

    Rebates. Cell phone rebates can be confusing and most people don’t like them. That’s why Wirefly has not offered rebates on any products since 2007. We don’t even offer rebates from the carriers. All of our prices are simple and straightforward. The price you see is the price you pay with no need to wait for a rebate.

    But Dorothy Cooer on March 3, 2010 is saying that she needs to submit a rebate form. so you are doing rebates againg or you are not? I am considering doing business with wirefly but reading a lot of bad blogs about you guys and on your website seeing conflicting issues.

    I recently ordered on March 12 – upgraded 2 of my 4 lines (to LG Arena) which renewed my family plan of 700 mins – since I already had unlimited text in place – my plan was not changed. I also got their protection service – great deal at $50 per phone for the whole year- no deductible and you can make a claim 3x. – free shipping. Later that weekend – my daughter who lives in another state wanted a Samsung Mythic – I called them again – I had to pay about $50 for her phone and got the protection plan – (That phone at her local Walmart would have cost her about $200 with the renewal and they had to order it.

    Become their fan on facebook and you have some coupon codes to either get 2GB mem card or bluetooth headset. – If you get the headset – buy the Kingston 2GB card is only at the moment $11.88.

    My friday order phones arrived monday – already set to run – all I had to do was put the battery in and turn it on – AT & T already had the info on these phones.

    It was free shipping and no tax.

    So I am very happy with my purchases and will do it again when the time comes or look at buying my accessories there too!

  • We currently have a Cellular One plan, but pay our monthly charge to AT&T (they took over cell-one in our area). We need to switch to an AT&T plan. We currently have a 2 line plan & would like to switch to a 4 line. We looked at your plans yesterday on-line and it shows that we would get all 4 phone at no charge along with no activation fees. We were going for the 700 minute family plan with the family messaging: 69.99 + 30.00 + 9.99 + 9.99.

    Is this correct? And would we still be billed through At&T?

      The contract and plan would be through AT&T, and they are ones who will bill you every month. You can get free activation at this time with AT&T, and you can have a 700 min plan with 4 lines. Depending on the phones you select will depend on the cost of the order, but the plan + messaging and 2 add on lines is correct.

    i have used wirefly for about 4 years and have always came out on top. wirefly will check if you are eligible for an upgrade before they send your phone. the only qwerk is make sure that you contact your carrier to maintain your plan

    I am ready to upgrade my phone but want to maintain my current family plan terms with T-mobile…. are you able to sell me the upgrade (currently 23 months into the plan and original purchase of a Blackberry 8100 Pearl) to the Blackberry 9700 Bold without causing any change to my current contract terms other than the contract extention of 2 years? No change in my family plan rate or data plan rate? Also, if I buy from Wirefly is there any shipping or tax? and is there a new “Activation” fee? Thanks for a prompt reply

        I want to know why wirefly do not offer the rebate as other company are offering, yes as I have see on wirefly that they are offering the phones for free.
