Verizon Wireless Upgrade Eligibility Requirements

Q. Am I Eligible for a Verizon Wireless Cell Phone Upgrade?

Not all existing Verizon Wireless customers qualify for contract extensions. Verizon Wireless alone sets threshold rules as to who is eligible for a contract extension, as follows:

  • Hey I have Verizon and I have 5 basic phones and my 3 kids want smartphones and I only have 2 upgrades is there anyway I could get all three upgrades for my kids?

  • I initiated service w Verizon via wirefly 18 months ago; Verizon is offering me an early upgrade w extended contract…….after this 18mo of service will I suffer an early termination fee w wirefly?

    • Hi Joyce,
You are fine to do an early upgrade with Verizon. After 6 months of getting your phone you are fine to upgrade or change your plan.

I have a contract already with Verizon, but i don’t actually have the phone still. It was broken, so we don’t use it and don’t know where it is. Could I still be eligible for an upgrade, even if we haven’t used the number in a long time (about 3 years) and don’t have the phone? The contract/account is still open, we just don’t use it. And would I be able to choose an iPhone 4?

    • Hi Ananda,
As long as that phone number is still active and your bill is current on that phone number it would be eligible to upgrade and you can choose any phone you like. You might have to get a new data plan if you are choosing a smartphone and you did not have one before.

I want to go back to regular phone, dump android.
I have Verizon. I had to get a new phone last october as my other phone was stolen or lost.
At that time I agreed to 2 yr extension.
Can I go back to regular phone w Verizon? What penalties if any would I incur?
All I need is unlimited phone minutes and no more than 1000 text messages.

  • My phone is up for an upgrade and I would like to give the upgrade to another phone on the same plan. If I do that can I still get a phone from wirefly at the low rates I see posted on the site after the other line activates their new phone?

    • Hi Shane,
Wirefly is able to do buddy upgrades but we need you to call in to have it processed correctly. Please give us a call at 800-239-6138 and we will be glad to help you.

  • I have five lines on my Verizon wireless account, three of which are eligible for an upgrade. However, the main line on the account (mine) that I wish to upgrade is not. On the Verizon wireless site I can transfer an upgrade from one line to another. However, the phone I want is also 100.00 more there. My line is also grandfathered in on the 29.99/mo unlimited data for smartphones plan. If I upgrade through Verizon, I have been assured that my unlimited data package will remain.

Can I do an alternate upgrade through Wirefly? And, if so, will I be able to retain my unlimited data plan?

    • Hi Chris,
Thanks for asking a great question. You can do a buddy upgrade with Wirefly on your Verizon account. We would need you to call in to place that order and at that time we can look at your data plan and let you know if it is available on your new phone. One thing to keep in mind is if you are going to an LTE phone with Verizon you will not be able to keep that data plan even through Verizon. Give us a call at 1-800-552-9000 and we will be happy to go over all of your options with you.

I have a flip phone but want to upgrade to a smart phone. I will need a data plan can I share my son’s who is on my family plan?

    • Hi Lanetta,

As of right now the data plan that your son has on his phone is for his phone only even though you are on a family plan to share minutes and maybe text messaging. The carriers have been taking about coming up with a family data plan for a few years now but have not moved forward. If you want to move to a smartphone you will have to get your own data plan. Let me know if you have any more questions about data plans.

  • when it says im good for an upgrade, and the phone is free with a 2 year contract, does that mean i quilfy to get the free phone?

    • Hi Brian,
You are correct that if it says your good for an upgrade that you can get certain phones for free from Wirefly.com. Select the phone that you want to know the price to and then make sure that on the right side you select “upgrade my phone” and that will give you the price that you qualify for. Hope this answers your question. Let me know if you have any more questions.

My question has to do with switching service from one line to another. For a few years we had the Verizon USB internet connection. Recently we switched to another provider for our high speed internet connection and I went to “shut-off” the USB line (it had its own ph #) there are 3 other cell phone lines on the account and I did not realize at one point one of these lines was upgraded using the USB ph # so now it is still under contract thru August 2012.
I have that line “suspended” while I figure out what to do so I am not paying for it. My thought, transfer the line and replace one of the other 3 lines which are eligibe for upgrades (or could be shut off since their contracts are up. The kicker, I want to keep the cell phone #s just transfer the USB contract so I am not hit with the early termination fee?

    • Hi Shannon,
I am not aware of any way to transfer the contract from one phone number to another number on that account. You could cancel one of the numbers that is out of contract and move that phone to the phone number that is under contract but that would be on the phone number that is on the USB device. Hope this helps you and thanks for asking a good question.

I am with T-mobile and have been for the last 6 years, my kids all have Verizon. Could my daughter ad me to her line if I switch to Verizon, also do I get to keep my old number and do I need a different phone??

    • Jane, here are your answers:

      1. Yes, your daughter can add you to her Verizon plan.
      2. No, you don’t have to change your number. You can “port” your current number to the new Verizon phone.
      3. Yes, you will need a new phone.

Wirefly has great prices on Verizon phones and we can do all the work getting you set up on your daughter’s plan. We will need information about her account, so she should be with you when you set up your new phone. If you have any questions about what to do, call Wirefly at 866-852-3216 and tell ‘em Bob (the guy who makes videos on YouTube) sent you.

  • I have a question regarding your “Terms of Service” in regards to updgrading to a new phone? A user on my account is due for a new phone, but likes the one she has. If for some reason she is not happy with the upgrade phone after a period of time, is it in violation of your terms for deactivating a device and switching back to her old phone? I know on Verizon I can switch devices on the fly by going online and using the phone id to switch it. I’m not changing service or the new 2 year contract or anything, just the device. Your terms state “deactivating your phone” may lead to additional charges within the first 6 months. Thank you.

    • Rex, interesting question!

As long as you pay your monthly bill, you can switch back to an old phone with no penalty. If the new phone requires an account change (such as requiring a data plan, for example), you will probably not be able to switch back to the old non-data phone and pay the non-data monthly rate. As long as you pay the monthly rate determined by the new phone, you can switch back to the old phone anytime you want.

      Hope that answers your question.

      Bob at Wirefly

  • Another member on my verizon wireless plan is eligible for an upgrade. However, she does not want it. Would i be able to take her upgrade and replace my phone?

    • Joan, if I understand what you’d like to do, you want to buy a new phone for the eligible line and switch your existing number to it. Is that right? If so, that’s called a “buddy upgrade” and we can do that for you. However, keep in mind you will have to pay Verizon the monthly fee for your current line, as well as the monthly fee for the new line. As long as you are okay wtih adding this new service to your existing plan, it is not a problem to do what you’re asking to do.

      Thanks for thinking of Wirefly!

yes you would be able to do that however she would not upgrade till 2 morre years than her original cut off date for her original upgrade.

      • Hi Brandonl,
You are able to do a “Buddy Upgrade” with Verizon and Wirefly. You are correct that the phone number that you do the upgrade on would not be eligible for another two years.

  • Sareyna
    March 11, 2012

I would like to know if there are any activation fees if I buy my phone here?

    • Sareyna, yes, Wirefly has the same fees (such as activation fees) that the carrier charges. In fact, Wirefly simply passes these fees along to the carrier — we do not get to keep them ourselves.

However, Wirefly often offers “free activation” periods when you can avoid paying the activation fee. Check Wirefly every few days to see if there is a free activation period. These are not advertised in advance, and they are usually only three or four days long. The savings are nice, though!

      Bob at Wirefly

  • If I am due for an upgrade (which I am) can I upgrade from Android 3G to an iphone and if so, what is the charge for the iphone in comparison to the Android 4G?

    • Sally, Wirefly does not sell the iPhone, so you will have to check with Verizon directly on that. Keep in mind that the iPhone is a 3G device, not a 4G device. You can get 4G Android phones but not a 4G iPhone, at least not on Verizon.

      Bob at Wirefly

  • I am curious as to how Wirefly is able to offer “free” phones on upgrade, and Verizon charges ? How is this possible ?
    Thanks !!

    • Steve, Verizon has thousands of stores and tens of thousands of employees for those stores, which adds up to LOTS of overhead. Wirefly has no stores, just an efficient Internet shipping facility. Verizon knows that its costs for selling a phone are far more than Wirefly’s, so Verizon (and Sprint and T-Mobile) contract with Wirefly to sell phones efficiently. We save the carriers big money in rent and salary costs, so they give us a discount that we pass along to you. It really is as simple as that.

      Thanks for asking!

      Bob at Wirefly

      • Can I upgrade one of my phones in a Verizon business account through Wirefly?

        • David, unfortunately, Wirefly does not do business accounts, only private accounts. Thanks for asking!

          Bob at Wirefly

  • i am looking to replace my current phone as my old one is not working well and was wondering if i am able to purchase a phone from you and then have my current service transferred to the new phone

    • Virginia, you can definitely purchase a phone from Wirefly and have Wirefly transfer your service to your new phone. That’s what we do, and we’re pretty good at it! As long as you are out of contract, switching to a new phone on the same carrier — or switching to a new carrier — is a piece of cake for us.

Let me know if you have any other questions.

  • Just got off the phone with Wirefly rep…the fella took great care of me. I was able to use my husbands upgrade to get a great deal on a galaxy nexus. The rep also assured me that my unlimited data would stay in tact!

  • I called Verizon to try to determine what my “PIN” is….they say they don’t have PIN’s, and seemed confused as to why I would need one. I’ve already ordered from Wirefly, and the order is on hold, waiting for me to find this “PIN”…..Help?

    • Rob, you should have a PIN…you need a PIN for your voicemail. If you give me your order number, I can have someone call you to help and do a three-way with the Verizon.

I currently do not have a phone because it malfunctioned on me. We called verizon to ask if the insurance covered it but it did not. My mother is eligible for an upgrade but she loves her phone. We would like to know if i can take her upgrade and put it on my line? We’re trying to get the droid razr in white.
    Thanks for the time

    • Preston, Verizon does allow some switching of eligibility from one line to another, so call Wirefly at 800-552-9000 to discuss. It just might be possible to get you the phone you want.

      Bob at Wirefly

  • Bob, I’m confused. On some of your replies, you said Wirefly can’t do buddy upgrades. But on the recent replies, you said wirefly allows buddy upgrades. Can you clarify?

    • Binh, Wirefly can now do *some* buddy upgrades for Verizon. It’s only for Verizon and only in rather specific circumstances. This was a change made in the past couple of months… I think it started in October 2011.

      Hope that clears it up!

My husband is due for an upgrade and he currently has the lg Octane and is super happy with it. I in the other hand want the Iphone and ive seen that Verizon has them cheaper online. My question is can I have his upgrade without him being charged for data and just transfer it to my number? I tried going to the store but they are charging me more than just purchasing it online. Please help, I really want the Iphone :) Thanks for your time.

    • Vanessa, Wirefly does not sell the iPhone. You will have to try another source.

Thanks for checking with Wirefly, however!

    OUR ACCOUNT # IS 519893235(T-MOBILE)

  • I understand there is an instant saving discount fee for phones bought online, such as Wirefly or Target Mobile if the line is disconnected, but it wasn’t clear if doing an upgrade and replacing the equipment bought online will cause me to pay the discount fee. I’m trying to transfer the upgrade from another number on the same plan to my number, thus allowing me to upgrade, so that I can replace my Droid Incredible and buy the Galaxy Nexus online. Is it possible?

    • Danny, I’m afraid that I don’t understand exactly what you are trying to do. I recommend that you call 866-852-3216 and speak to an agent, who will work with you to set up your account in the most economical way. Good luck!

      Bob at Wirefly

  • Hello can I use my dad’s upgrade for my self?…were on the same account

    • Rich, Verizon allows “buddy upgrades,” which means that you are generally allowed to swap with someone else’s upgrade eligibility. However, it’s a little complicated, so you should call Wirefly to discuss it at 866-852-3216. Be sure to give all the information up front and we will be able to tell you if it can be done.

      Good luck!

      Bob at Wirefly

    • I just bought the new Samsung Galaxy Nexus using a buddy upgrade. According to the guy I spoke with at 866-852-3216, buddy upgrades are only available from Wirefly through Verizon. He also recommended doing it over the phone rather than online. I called the sales number (800-552-9000) and was able to do it. She did say it was a manual process for her, which must explain why it took over 50 minutes. I had to sit on hold for quite a while (almost half of the call) at the end of the order while she connected with a Verizon rep to process it because it’s a buddy upgrade.

So, it will take more time than a standard upgrade and you’ll need to call instead of processing it online, but the buddy upgrade does work through Wirefly with Verizon. So glad I was able to save $60!

And a huge thanks to Bob for your comment here. This was the only comment I was able to find online indicating that a buddy upgrade through Wirefly was even possible. Most forums just flat out said it couldn’t be done. Glad they were wrong!

      • That’s great, Joey. Thanks for letting me know how it worked out… and enjoy your new phone!

        Bob at Wirefly

  • I am the primary on my account–do i get a new phone every year?

    • Allison, Verizon may allow you a credit to upgrade every year, but Wirefly is only permitted to sell upgrades after a 2-year contract has been completed. If you’ve had your phone for a year and want to upgrade, go to a Verizon store and see what your options are.

      Bob at Wirefly

  • My husband is eligible for an upgrade with 2 yr contract renewal of course. We found the phone he’s wanting on tigerdirect.com, However he doesn’t want to change out his old phone just yet. Can we upgrade, and renew his contract WITHOUT activating the NEW phone on the account right away? If so, Is there a time frame involved?

    • Ashley, that’s an interesting question and the answer is complicated. If your husband does not currently have a smartphone with a data plan and you want to get a smartphone, it will require a data plan and there’s pretty much no way to avoid activating the new phone. In particular, all 4G (LTE) phones are shipped with the SIM card that activates the phone… there’s no way to avoid that. If he currently has a 3G smartphone with a data plan and you want to get a new 3G smartphone, then you might be able to do what you want to do.

All this depends on your eligibility, of course. If your 2-year contract is up, you should be eligible.

      Bob at Wirefly

  • Dennis Gorme
    December 8, 2011

I have been eligible for a new phone for months now. What I want to know is what phones are available to me?

    • Dennis, if you are eligible for a new phone, then any phone is available to you. First, you should go to Wirefly’s Eligibility Checker to make sure you are eligible. Then choose any phone you’d like.

      Bob at Wirefly

  • When checking for verizon eligibility, it asks for a PIN. I never use a PIN for my verizon account. I have tried all the PINs I’ve ever used (for others) and still can’t check and now am locked out.

    • Gail, unfortunately at this point, all you can do is contact Verizon to get your PIN number or have it reset. Some carriers require a PIN to check eligibility, and Verizon is one of those. Wirefly can’t reset the PIN… only Verizon can do that.

      Bob at Wirefly

  • If I share my plan with my wife does she share my unlimited data plan also or just my minutes?

    • Mike, that’s an interesting and somewhat complicated question. First… does your wife have a phone now? If yes, then is it a smartphone that has a data plan? Or is it a more basic phone with a voice/text only plan?

If your wife already has a smartphone, then she can be added to your family plan and get the same unlimited data deal you have. (You can’t “share” per se, but she will pay the same as you and get unlimited data.) If she does not have a phone (or if she has a basic phone), then she will not get unlimited data when she joins your family plan.

Yes, it’s complicated. I suggest that you call Wirefly at 866-852-3216 to discuss if you have more questions. That way, your questions can be answered in real time by a knowledgeable agent.

      Bob at Wirefly

  • My phone should be eligible for an upgrade. However, the Verizon Account is a Business Account. Can I upgrade through Wifefly? If so, what information do I need?

    • Phil, yes you can upgrade a Verizon business account through Wirefly. Two potential deal-breakers for us is that we can only upgrade you on Verizon if you have (or are going to) a consumer rate plan, and making the upgrade is dependent on Wirefly’s ability to access your business account in Verizon’s system. Assuming you have (or are willing to accept) a consumer rate plan and that we can access your account, Wirefly can make the upgrade. Call 866-852-3216 to see if that will work out for you.

      Bob at Wirefly

  • I have a question…my does verizon keeps telling my that i am eligable for upgrade and then I come on here and it says I’m not…whats up with that?

    • Joshua, most of the carriers (such as Verizon) will let you upgrade before your two-year contract is up, with some strings attached. However, the carriers do not permit Wirefly to offer the same upgrades. In most cases, you have to wait until the week before your two-year contract is up in order to upgrade through Wirefly. We wish that we could offer earlier upgrades, but our agreements don’t permit it.

    November 15, 2011

When I am looking to upgrade my phone Wirefly asks for plan upgrade. I currently have unlimited text, talk, and I am on the old $30 unlimited data plan. Will this stay the same. It also asks for Visual Voice mail/Premium Voice mail/none. If I choose none does it keep me on the basic voice mail I currently have?
This is the 1st time on this site and I am just wanting to be sure

    • Alan, you should be able to keep the plan you already have. If what you see says something different, it’s probably best to call 866-852-3216 and speak to an agent.

      Thanks for whopping with Wirefly!

      Bob at Wirefly

  • I would love to try out your site but the Eligibility program keeps telling me I have tried too many times. Okay.

So how long do I have to wait before I can try again? 1 hour? 2 hours? 1 day? 7 days? 1 month?

I am getting tired of waiting. I dont have to wait this long at my bank.

    • Buddy, I’m going to assume that you have a Verizon line. Wirefly’s Eligibility Checker links to Verizon and it locks out after a certain number of failed attempts. (I’m not sure, but I think the number is five attempts.) This lockout comes from Verizon, not from Wirefly. To find out your eligibility, you will have to contact Verizon about it. Verizon will need your correct PIN, so be sure to have that handy. Yeah, it’s a pain that you need the &%$&* PIN jsut to check eligibility, but all the carriers require it.

      Hope that helps!

      Bob at Wirefly

      • What Verizon site are you guys using. I am using the regular site where I check my wireless bill and I am getting in there on my account as well as my wife’s account. But your site fails. So something is not working when it leaves your web page.

        • Buddy, I can’t see what you are seeing, so please call Wirefly at 866-852-3216 to discuss with a customer service agent. I have not had the sort of problem you’re having, so I discussed it with the IT team that built the eligibility tool. They told me that the lockout was coming from Verizon, not Wirefly. But please call so that we can learn exactly what you are trying to do. There may be a simple answer that we’re all overlooking.

Yes, I live off an assistance (food stamps) Would you know if I can receive a free phone.

    • Joe, I don’t know if you qualify for a free phone. However, you should contact one of the carriers (Verizon, AT&T, Sprint and T-Mobile) to see if they have a free phone program. I have heard about some programs but have no information on them.

      Bob at Wirefly

  • One of my kids is eligible for an upgrade next month. Can I take his upgrade next month and he takes my upgrade next March?

    • Fred, that would be easy, wouldn’t it? Unfortunately, Verizon does not allow “buddy upgrades,” which is where you take someone else’s eligibility and they get yours. That would mean that your number is swapped to the new device, even though the new device was purchased with someone else’s elgibility. So the answer is no… you can’t do what you are suggesting. That is a Verizon requirement and is not driven by Wirefly.

      Bob at Wirefly

      • Jill Boddy
        October 19, 2011

Actually, if you are on the Verizon site, you can pass your upgrade eligibility to another member on your plan if you would like…

        • Jill, perhaps that is something that Verizon allows when you work directly with Verizon… I don’t know for sure either way on that. Unfortunately, Verizon does not allow Wirefly to do such eligibility-swap upgrades.

The glitch in this is that phones usually cost a lot less at Wirefly than they do at Verizon. You might get the eligibility swap you want at Verizon, then have to pay a lot more for the phone you want. It’s worth checking out, however.

          Bob at Wirefly

      • Fred, if you visit the verizonwireless site under your account, you may be able to transfer the upgrade eligibility to another line if it is in the same plan. I have a family plan with a couple of phones that are eligible for upgrades and there is a button to transfer the upgrade option to another line on my plan…hope that helps.

      • steven gallitz
        November 25, 2011

it is possible. i did this about 6 months ago. my wife had an upgrade, but she doesnt care about technology such as phones. basically its a simple 5 min process.. take upgrade on your sons account. go through the whole setup process.. go home and go on the verizonwireless.com website. then transfer the 2 phone lines back around. its that easy!

    • I am a CSR for Verizon, and I can tell you with absolute certainty that you can use you another lines upgrade eligibility to get a phone for an alternate line within same account. The trick here though is that if you use his upgrade eligibility then it extends that lines contract by two years. Conversely when he uses yours, your line’s contract will be extended by two years. Upgrade eligibility with Verizon is granted 20 months from your last contractual upgrade. Remember though that even if you are not eligible for a discounted ugprade you always have the option to upgrade at retail price. How wirefly works though I am not sure, thier policy might be different and they may have additional terms and early termination fees that Verizon doesnt have. Hope this helps.

      • Gary, Verizon may allow line swap upgrades, but they do not allow Wirefly to do them. If someone wants to do that, only Verizon can provide it. The reason people want Wirefly to do it is that phones usually cost less at Wirefly than they do directly from Verizon. Unfortunately, Wirefly can’t do that type of upgrade, so the customer can’t get the discounted phone price.

        Bob at Wirefly

        • I understand I was only trying to help clarify. Here shopping myself. Trying to get my wife a new iphone or htc rhyme for Christmas. She has Verizon and I have t-mobile ironically. Regardless though, wish you guys had iPhones… she sure would enjoy Siri.

        • What you can do however, is just get the phone via wirefly on your son’s account, and then go to a Verizon store and tell them that you and your son want to swap phones.

    • Verizon does allow customers to “steal” eachothers upgrades. It is called an alternate upgrade. It has always been that way. It can be done online, in a store, or over a phone. Also, the code you need is not and has never been called a pin. It is a PASSWORD. So, order the phones here if you can but if you have questions about how Verizon works it is best to contact them directly as there is no way a third party vendor could know all the rules of all the service providers. It is not their job to do so.

  • Frederico Pineda
    September 27, 2011

I am eligible for an upgrade of my cell phones. Would I get the same pay/plan with the same cell phone numbers?

    • Frederico, if you are eligible for a phone upgrade, you will keep your phone number. As for the cost of the plan, that depends on the type of plan you have now. If you have a simple “flip phone” now and decide to upgrade to an Android phone, you will need to add a data plan to your current plan. If you already have a data plan, you should be able to keep it where it is. However, you can check with a Wirefly sales agent at 800-552-9000 to be sure.

      Thanks for thinking of Wirefly!

      Bob at Wirefly

  • Can I get a better price and/or upgrade from you than from Verizon. They told me that all
I get is a $50.00 credit towards a new phone when my current contract expires, which is a joke.

    • David, Wirefly has lots of free phones for Verizon and great prices on others. You should plug your information into Wirefly’s Eligibility Checker to see when you will be eligible to upgrade through Wirefly. Happy shopping!

      Bob at Wirefly

    • That is an additional “NEW Every Two” discount. It was discountinued back in January but if you still have it on your primary account you are permitted to hang on to it for a while, or until your next upgrade. Let’s take the new 16GB iphone 4S for instance. With Verizon if you buy the phone it is like $650 or $700, with a 2 year contract it is reduced to $199.99, with a NE2 it would go down further to $149.99. Great loyalty reward really, my guess is that you posssibly misunderstood or it was poorly explained to you which on occasion has been known to happen I am sure.
