iPhone web browser apps offer many excellent tips on faster internet surfing. However, before any of that is useful information, you must first ensure that your internet connection is strong and reliable. If your internet connection is flaky and/or weak, then any other caveats of improved internet surfing are moot points. The quality and speed of internet connectivity is governed by multiple aspects, some of which can be modified and some of which can’t. Here are five aspects within your control that can make the biggest impact on your internet connection’s speed and reliability.
While software updates can be a pain if you don’t have handy access to WiFi, it’s a necessary evil that will keep your iPhone running smoothly and keep bugs that slow speed down resolved. Be sure your phone is always running the latest software from both Apple and your carrier. Open Settings, tap General, and then you’ll see any Software Updates available. Follow the download prompts from there. You can consult the manufacturer or user manual to update wireless router software, as well.
Using your iPhone over long periods for diverse tasks can cause it to perform slow and erratic. This can be corrected by optimization. Shutdown and restart the iPhone. Double-depress the home button so that you can flick all open apps off the screen. Go to Settings so that you can switch airplane mode to off; wait three seconds before turning it back on. Turn WiFi to off; wait 30 seconds before turning it back on
Internet speed can be improved by simply refreshing the network. Cellular connection can be refreshed by removing the IPhone’s SIM card; wait a few seconds and reinsert it. Open Settings, tap WiFi, tap Network Name, and then tap Renew; you’ll tap to Forget This Network and then you’ll rejoin it to refresh WiFi. Alternatively, you can perform a more comprehensive reset of VPN connections and WiFi. Go into Settings, tap About, tap Reset, and tap Reset Network Settings. Now, go back into Settings to erase profile installed VPNs by tapping General, tapping Profile, tapping Profile Name, and tapping Remove. You can now re-establish VPN, WiFi, and their passwords.
We often think as WiFi as the go-to connection and leave it turned on to take advantage of it anywhere and everywhere it’s available. This may not always be the fastest connection, however. In the top left corner of your iPhone screen, you’ll see a symbol representing how you’re connected to the internet via your carrier - LTE and 4G being the fastest and 3G, Edge, 1X, and GPRS being the slower options. 4G and LTE are often faster than WiFi, especially if the WiFi is flaky. If you have both WiFi and high-speed carrier connectivity available and the WiFi is slow or flaky, just go into Settings and turn your WIFi off to use 4G or LTE provided by the carrier.
Proximity matters - iPhone signal gets weaker and internet speed gets slower the further you are from your WiFi network’s base station. Try to stay within 115 feet from it. Obstructions matter - certain materials and electronics can cause electromagnetic interference and affect the quality of the WiFi signal. Don’t position items like microwaves, monitors, cordless phones, and such between you and your WiFi source. For the fastest speed, make sure that your router is transmitting on both 5GHz and 2.4GHz bands and 802.11n networking.
