A number of reports are surfacing recently, stating that the Apple Watch Series 3, specifically the LTE compatible edition, is encountering issues related to connectivity. Because of this, Apple’s shares were reported to have dropped about 2.5 percent today. 2.5 percent may seem like a small percentage, but considering that the iPhone maker’s worth is valued at over $800 billion, that dip is equivalent to about $20 billion.
As revealed by Apple to The Verge, it appears that the connectivity issues happen when the Apple Watch Series 3 tries to connect to an unauthenticated Wi-Fi network with no connectivity, wherein the smartwatch sometimes fails to get a cellular connection. Apple is said to be already busy working on a fix for the issues, and this fix should be rolled out in a future software update.
Apart from this year’s new iPhone models (the iPhone X, the iPhone 8, and the iPhone 8 Plus), the Apple Watch Series 3 had generated considerable buzz, mainly because of its ability to connect to an LTE network. Ever since the Apple Watch made its debut around a couple of years ago, it has always been reliant on a nearby iPhone for connectivity. But this year’s model promises to be a game changer, at least in the wearable devices market. The third generation Apple Watch can make and take phone calls, receive text messages, and even stream playlists from one’s Apple Music account, without needing an iPhone in the vicinity.
According to the Wall Street Journal, the units that had connectivity issues were used on AT&T’s and T-Mobile’s network. So far, there were no problems reported yet for other major wireless carrier networks. Needless to say, reliability is a major factor in getting people to have increased appreciation not only for smartwatches, but also for other wearable devices. In fairness to Apple, this is its first attempt at an LTE enabled smartwatch -- it is bound to stumble along the way. But others might say that Apple is not just like any other company out there -- in other words, it must be held to a higher standard compared to most.
Some connectivity issues aside, the Apple Watch Series 3 has generally impressed, based on the reviews so far. And thankfully, the issues do not appear to be that difficult to fix, which means that by the time consumers do get their hands on their preordered units, the smartwatch should do just fine.
