Throughout the years Apple has been known to release new versions of their favorite flagship device, the iPhone, on a yearly basis. Apple offers numerous versions for the iPhone, with minimal feature changes, depending on the wireless carrier; however, the devices are generally the same.
Taiwan's United Daily News reported that this is going to change. According to the news organization, at least one iPhone will have a dual SIM card slot, and it's rumored that this version would only be available in the Chinese market. United Daily News also reported that it may very well be the iPhone 9 with its 6.1 inch LCD screen. According to additional online leaks, the phone may have the capacity to switch SIM cards — or between one physical and one electronic SIM (eSIM). All other markets will receive a single SIM card slot as usual.
It has been said that Apple will promote a dual SIM card organizer known as the Dual SIM Standby or DSS. The unique feature allows the user to switch between the two SIM cards that physically sit inside the phone, which keeps two cell connection running simultaneously, at the expense of faster battery depletion. Huawei, Google and Samsung are already using this technology. Currently, third-party developers have been asked to add the DSS technology into iPhones. However, before this upcoming release Apple has never integrated this type of technology into their phones.
When Apple finally introduces the dual SIM devices to China, it will be intriguing how it performs in the real world. For example, how the battery life will hold up to account for the additional SIM card processor. Apple has gone to considerable lengths to fully use each millimeter of room inside its gadgets, by even going as far as consolidating its processing chips, and even moving forward with the controversial move of eliminating the headphone jack to make the most utilization of its thin design.
While this information is not 100% confirmed, it would be great to get a dual-SIM iPhone.
