Google Lens was first introduced back in May of last year, during Google’s annual I/O developer conference. For those who missed the news, Google Lens is basically an augmented reality powered software platform that not only can detect and decipher texts, but also even recognize objects (in real time) either from scanning pictures or by viewing the actual objects through a camera sensor.
Sure, the concept of Google Lens is indeed cool, but this search tool was only made available to users of Google’s Pixel smartphone devices. As reported by IDC more than a week ago, Google had shipped just 3.9 million units of its flagship handsets in 2017, which means that only less than 4 million mobile users out there can personally enjoy the technical wizardly of Google Lens.
But that should change soon -- Google has revealed this week that it is looking to make Google Lens available on other devices, particularly smartphones manufactured by some of the most popular phone makers of today like Samsung, LG, Motorola, Huawei, Sony, HMD Global (which has licensed the Nokia brand), and even Apple.
This is made possible through Google Photos (either on the latest version on Android powered mobile devices and on iPhones that have installed iOS 9 or newer) and through Google Assistant. It should be noted though that Google Lens is made available in English, and only in major mobile markets that include the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, France, Germany, India, Italy, Singapore, and Spain.
Meanwhile, in other augmented reality related news, Google is making its official AR apps available to a bunch of Android running smartphones. With the launch of ARCore 1.0 (the first complete version of the tech giant’s augmented reality platform) this week, developers can now publish their AR powered apps to Google Play for the first time ever.
Given the fact that only a few smartphones only come with support for Google’s ARCore, only a limited percentage of the Android population can experience these new AR apps. Still, owners of the following handsets should start to have some AR fun soon:
Oh, ARCore 1.0 is also bringing an official Ghostbusters game called Ghostbusters World, and a special look inside Nou Camp, the home stadium of soccer giants FC Barcelona.
