Google has confirmed recently that it will be starting to roll out its Android Messages feature for web in the next few days. For those not familiar with the feature, it basically lets Android users send and receive SMS (short message service) or RCS (rich communication services) messages using their desktop computer by way of the Internet.
According to Google, the feature is already rolling out and should start to be experienced by users over the next week. Some may remember that back in February early this year, there was talk that Android Messages would soon allow users to text via web. The tech giant’s announcement confirms that it is indeed happening.
In a lot of ways, Android Messages for web works the same as the equivalent feature found in Google Allo. Users can get started by heading to messages.android.com in order to acquire a QR (quick response) code that can be read in the Android app through a new “Messages for web” menu. When launched, users should see this displayed when they click the overflow icon located in the top right section.
As far as navigation goes, the interface of Android Messages for web is pretty straightforward -- chat threads are shown on the left section, while the chosen active conversation is displayed on the right side. Texts, photos, and even stickers synced over and get shown on the web client, which comes with a picker for sending images, stickers, and of course, emoji.
Users not only can create new messages or view existing old ones, they also enjoy the ability to get desktop notifications on the web. Right now, the list of supported web browsers include Google’s own Chrome, Safari, Firefox, and Microsoft Edge.
Google has also taken the opportunity to recently reveal that Messages has now been integrated with new GIF search features in order to go along with the current range of stickers and expressive features. Indeed, when users select the + icon, a new GIF section will be displayed, showcasing the usual categories, as well as the ability to start searching for a particular situation appropriate GIF. The search results are then shown through a full screen view that also features a carousel so that users can browse and choose the best GIF.
Other notable features that recently made their debut in Messages are Smart Reply in English, inline link previews for video content and articles, and the ability to copy one time passwords for two factor authentication directly from the notification.
