Just this week, Google launched the developer preview of the upcoming new version of its mobile operating system, nicknamed Android O for now. Because this release is still a developer version, only developers and early testers will get to personally enjoy its features for now, but most Android mobile users should be able to experience them soon enough. So what can people expect from Android O?
First and foremost, Android O is expected to improve the battery life of mobile devices. Like what Apple’s iOS does, Android O is said to be capable of limiting and managing what apps do in the background despite having several apps already launched on a handset. While it is a feature that is not clearly discernible to the naked eye, it should come pretty handy especially for those fond of using more than one app at a time.
Android O also brings notifications channels for users. Google has always been good with notifications, and with its latest Android OS, it will allow people to group their alerts into channels, which Google refers to as app defined categories for notification content. Notifications can be tricky when you have a lot, and the notifications channels should help sort out things, and with all alerts neatly organized, you can monitor and manage them better.
Of course, there are times when you just need to stay away from notifications for a certain period of time. Not to worry -- Android will offer the ability to snooze alerts by simply sliding one’s finger across a notification, and then set the time for how long that alert will be snoozed, e.g. 10 minutes, 15 minutes, etc.
Apple has already managed a picture in picture video for the iPad, but this functionality is yet to debut on a smartphone. Android O is looking to do just that, letting users continue to play a video while operating another open app. It is not clear yet if this feature will be supported in popular video apps like HBO Now or Netflix, but we are keeping our fingers crossed.
When you are in a hurry, it would be nice to have lock screen shortcuts. Nougat, the current Android version, already allows for this, but Android O should expand upon this idea further. In other words, get ready to have the ability to fully customize and manage your shortcuts on your lock screen.
For those taking full advantage of a password manager app, know that Android O will give you quick but safe access to it across your handset by way of autofill. Because of this system wide autofill functionality, choosing which password manager app to use is made a whole lot easier without compromising the security of your device.
Other notable features include wide gamut color (making colors more vivid), HiFi Bluetooth audio (for streaming higher quality sound), and keyboard shortcuts.
