HTC has done it -- it actually listened to its customers and came up with a new device that should excite its faithful again. Earlier today, HTC formally unveiled its latest flagship model for 2016 -- the HTC 10. Following the footsteps of last year's HTC One M9, the 10 has a lot of things to live up to. And true enough, HTC spent the last 12 months designing the 10, making sure to get the feedback of its past customers on how they could improve their flagship smartphone. With today's unveiling, the Taiwanese company has finally given the details on their newest flagship device.
For starters, the HTC 10 will be equipped with a 5.2-inch Quad HD Super LCD 5 display with a resolution of 1440x2560 resolution and 565 ppi density. According to HTC, this new display offers 30 percent more color compared to their last smartphone. For protection, the screen is covered in Gorilla Glass. Its curved edges blend uniformly into the metal frame of the phone.
The design of the HTC 10 is largely similar to both the M9 and the A9. The flagship phone carries HTC's signature all-aluminum build, machined ports and large chamfered edges. On the bottom of the display is a fingerprint scanner sandwiched between a couple of capacitive buttons. While previous HTC models have been called to be an iPhone copy, the 10 sets itself apart from the recognition. The HTC 10 has two BoomSound stereo speakers -- one above the screen, the other found on the bottom of the phone.
From within its frame, the HTC 10 runs on a 2.2GHz Quad-Core Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 processor. HTC has kept up with the rest of the 10's rivals as it has equipped it with 4GB of RAM. Impressively, the phone comes with a built-in storage of 64GB but with a microSD card slot for up to 2TB memory expansion. For this year's model, HTC has improved both software and hardware; which is what attributes to the faster touch response. HTC even promises that the 10 is 50 percent more responsive compared to past models.
Battery-wise, the HTC 10 packs in a non-removable Li-Ion 3,000 mAh battery that is allegedly good to last for two days with the help of hardware and software optimizations. The good news is that the battery supports Quick Charge 3.0 for fast and easy charging.
Listening to its previous customers, HTC has addressed the camera on the 10 promising that it has been better addressed. On the back of the phone, there is a 12-megapixel camera with 4K video recording and an optically stabilized f/1.8 lens that promises to take better low-light photos compared to past models. The camera comes with dual-LED flash and a second-generation laser autofocus system. In front, the camera on the 10 has also been upgraded to a 5-megapixel sensor with OIS and f/1.8 wide angle lens. According to HTC, they are the first to include wide angle lens on front-facing cameras; which should result to better selfies in low-light areas.
Perhaps the thing that sets the HTC 10 apart from all other Android smartphones in the market is the fact that they are the first Android device to support Apple's AirPlay wireless streaming standard. Since HTC has obtained an official license for this, AirPlay support on the HTC 10 is completely legit. With this, audio streaming is available on the device.
Along with its unveiling, HTC announced that they have started to accept pre-orders for the 10 with the promise to start shipping early next month. In the US, the 10 will be carried by Verizon Wireless, T-Mobile and Sprint. Meanwhile, an unlocked model for the Carbon Gray and Glacier Silver will sell for $699. Every HTC 10 device also comes with "Uh Oh Protection" plan offered by HTC, which basically means you get a replacement device throughout the first year once the 10 gets a cracked screen or is damaged by water.
