The world where software and machines not only know as much as humans but can also interpret that information is soon approaching. Two of the original founders of Apple's intelligent personal assistant Siri, Dag Kittlaus and Adam Cheyner, are working on an all new and improved artificial intelligence (AI) software, named Viv (spelled out with the Roman numerals 6 and 5, respectively). The company's name is said to come from the latin root, viv, to live.
Today, the primary AI platforms on the market are Siri, Google Now, and Cortana. All of these can interpret tasks like setting an alarm, making a phone call, and even looking up a random fact; however, they are seldom able to correctly interpret higher level and more complex requests. For example, Siri might be able to tell you the population of a city or the city where Barack Obama was born, but it wouldn't be able to tell you the population of the city where Barack Obama was born in one request. This query includes 2 separate components that must be interpreted in conjunction with each other in order to render the correct response. All of the main AI assistants today only know how to interpret what the engineers who designed them have explicitly implemented-- they lack the ability to do what they haven't been taught. Viv will. Or at least that is they hype thus far.
Viv is claiming that they are developing software that can generate its own code on the fly, and will learn from itself. It would learn much like a human and wouldn't necessarily need to have every one of its functions programmed into it on day 1, because on day 12 and days in the future, it would continue to get smarter and more intuitive. One of the ways it accomplishes this is by breaking down long and complicated strands of text and organizing specific keyword into categories like location and relationship to the user, and then interprets the request.
Today Viv is a 10 person team based in San Jose, and operates entirely independent from any other company, including Apple; though, they are making breakthroughs in the field of Artificial Intelligence that are sure to shake up the tech industry. They may be small and independent today, but I would not be surprised to see them acquired or bought out for a pretty penny by one of Silicon Valley's giants in the very near future.
