The next generation of iPhone devices could feature much enhanced audio capabilities, but it might do so at the expense of the familiar 3.5 millimeter audio jack. Nowhereelse, a France based web site, has apparently posted images of what appears to be an iPhone 7 case. Based on the leaked photos, it looks like the iPhone 7 might really come with dual speakers (as rumored). However, the standard audio jack is nowhere to be found.
The images posted by Nowhereelse distinctly show a couple of big slots at the bottom section of the device, which means that it will likely have support for dual speakers. Having said that, there seems to be no space left for an audio jack, which is usually situated on the bottom part of today’s current iPhone devices.
On the top rear section of the case, another slot is placed, which will likely house the camera. Some may note that the slot appears to be big enough to accommodate a couple of camera lenses. According to some rumors, the iPhone 7 Plus is said to feature a dual camera setup, but the smaller iPhone 7 will probably just feature a lone camera. This could mean that the slot simply will serve as the typical space allotted for the lens as well as its LED flash, and not for housing a twin camera configuration.
The iPhone 6s and the iPhone 6s Plus were two of the biggest selling smartphone offerings last year, but despite their very impressive specifications, many believe that the devices did not have enough new features to convince current iPhone owners to upgrade to the new models (iPhone fatigue). Some industry watchers are now saying that this has contributed to Apple’s rather flat sales for its iPhone devices during the final quarter of 2015.
In order to induce sales growth anew, it is imperative that Apple introduce a new iPhone model that would get iOS users to be excited about iPhones again. Dual stereo speakers could do the trick. For the longest time, iPhones have only feature mono speakers. The iPhone 7 (if the rumors are true) would be the first Apple smartphone to offer dual stereo speakers (iPad devices already feature them in the current lineup).
But is it at the expense of the 3.5 millimeter audio jack? There are reports that Apple will make full use of the Lightning port to pipe through sound, and will possibly produce a wireless edition of its EarPods. But what about those who want to plug in a Lightning cable to charge their iPhones while at the same time listen to audio via their wired earbuds? A number of years have already expressed their displeasure at the thought of losing the audio jack. Can Apple compensate with all the potential backlash? We will all find out soon.
