One week ago, a flaw was discovered on iOS and MacOS powered devices and machines. First reported by a software developer named Abraham Masri, the ChaiOS bug not only causes Apple gadgets to lock up, crash, and restart on their own, it also can lead to other more serious issues, like battery problems and resprings, among many others.
But just this week, Apple has proceeded to rolling out a new update to its iOS mobile operating system, and this time, it comes with a fix for the iMessage bug. The update is officially designated as iOS 11.2.5, and as indicated in the tech giant’s support web page, the fix for the ChaiOS flaw is made available for devices that include iPhone 5s and newer iPhone models, iPad Air and newer iPad tablets, and the iPod Touch (sixth generation model).
For those who missed the news last week, the ChaiOS bug works just like a text bomb. Basically, it comes in the form of a URL that is sent by way of the iMessage app on iOS or MacOS running machines. As soon as the recipient’s device gets the message, this is when the home screen crashes, the freezes, and the restarts begin to manifest themselves.
The ChaiOS bug works by taking full advantage of an iMessage functionality, wherein the app automatically generates a preview of any Internet link found on a text message. But since the link provided by the ChaiOS bug contains an insane number of characters (think in the range of tens or hundreds of thousands), the iMessage app essentially gets overloaded and proceeds to locking up the Apple machine. And because the ChaiOS bug affects every device or machine that is powered by iOS versions 10.0 to 11.2.5 beta 5, the potential number of users hit is quite significant.
With regards to the rest of the iOS 11.2.5 deployment, the update also brings support for HomePod (more on this later), as well as the granting Siri the ability to read the latest news updates (but only available for iOS mobile users based in the United States, the United Kingdom, and Australia).
Apple also took the opportunity to reveal that its HomePod will begin shipping on February 9th (the preordering period will start this coming January 26th). For those not familiar with this product, it is a music speaker that interacts with Siri commands. The HomePod is priced at $349.
