Sony got quite a lot of media attention when it introduced three new Xperia devices (the Xperia Z5, the Xperia Z5 Compact, and the Xperia Z5 Premium) during this year’s IFA trade show held in Berlin, Germany. And although this trio of new smartphones are considered premium range handsets, it appears that Sony is actually looking to build devices with more affordable prices.
As reported by the Economic Times, the Japan based tech giant is targeting to begin making smartphones in the country of India, the region that some industry watchers are saying will soon become the second largest smartphone market in the world in a couple of years. Moreover, Sony reportedly has plans to introduce several mobile devices with prices under $150 for the Indian market before the end of 2015 in order to compete with local Indian phone makers such as Intex and Micromax, both of whom sell smartphones with prices ranging from $50 to $200.
This news is the latest indication that markets that are primarily consisting of budget and midrange handsets (such as China and India) are fast becoming very lucrative smartphone arenas. For example, Chinese phone maker Xiaomi has managed to become the fourth biggest smartphone vendor in the world due to its Mi line of handsets, which are priced not more than $300. As for Sony, its timing is rather impeccable. By starting to build smartphones in India right now, it can take advantage of the subcontinent’s Make In India incentive, which awards the Japanese mobile manufacturer a tax benefit of up to 6.5 percent on the handsets it will be producing.
Sony is currently busy right now highlighting its new Xperia Z5 smartphones at the IFA trade show in Berlin. Of the three new Xperia handsets, the Xperia Z5 Premium looks like the one with the most to offer to mobile users. First of all, this device is considered the first smartphone in the world to feature a 4K Ultra HD display screen. And with a 5.5 inch screen, it should feel at home with today’s current crop of phablets, which include Apple’s iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, and Samsung’s Galaxy Note 5 and Galaxy S6 Edge+. Plus, those who purchase the Xperia Z5 Premium can expect a 23 megapixel camera on the device’s rear side, waterproof design, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 64 bit eight core chip, 3 gigabytes of random access memory (RAM), a 3,430 mAh battery, and Android 5.1 Lollipop mobile operating system.
