Where is the fun in discovering a new song from an artist you stumbled upon on Spotify when you can't even get an idea of what it sounds? Thankfully, the Spotify app now comes with a few tweaks that addresses that concern. Users can now preview songs and even albums with having to fully click through them.
The new feature is aptly called Touch Preview and it is designed to allow listeners to discover new music as easily and as quickly as possible. The discovery of new music has been the driving force not only for Spotify but for most music streaming service providers as well. Indeed, users usually sign up for music streaming to hear their favorite tunes, but one of the biggest reasons they stay longer is discovering new songs from artists previously unheard of.
Moreover, Spotify has realized that the users that get the most value out of its music streaming service are those who save a significant quantity of music content onto the Spotify app. These people are also the ones most likely to switch from free subscriptions to paid services.
According to Spotify's research, users have a difficult time perceiving what kind of music a band is offering just by looking at the cover art graphic. So the company explored some ways to enrich the user experience beyond the usual glance of the cover art. The result is the Touch Preview feature.
Touch Preview certainly empowers the most ardent (and adventurous) of Spotify's users. Apart from giving listeners easy access to personalized and preset playlists, the feature also gives users a very quick and simple way to save a lot of songs.
More importantly, the Touch Preview feature is a nice attribute that Spotify can highlight to differentiate itself from competitors like Pandora, Apple's Beats Music, and Google Play Music.
The feature works easy enough. Users need only press down and hold on any song, album, artist, or even playlist in order to listen to 30-second-long previews of the music content.
When exploring a playlist, users can just move their thumbs up and down the song list to begin listening to previews of each tune. When users swipe a song to the right, the app queues that song as the next one to play. When swiped to the left, the song is automatically saved to the user's music content folder.
For now, the new Touch Preview feature of the Spotify app will be rolling out to devices running on Apple's iOS mobile operating system only. Other platforms will be having their turn very soon.
