The good thing about T-Mobile's Music Freedom is that it lets consumers stream music from various service providers without it affecting their data allotments per month. Just recently, the carrier has added 14 music apps to Music Freedom, including popular services like SoundCloud and Google Play Music.
For reference, here is the full list of new apps that will not count against the subscribers' data caps:
The new services listed above will no doubt be welcome additions to the following already included in Music Freedom:
Three months ago in August, T-Mobile stated that it had streamed more than 7,000 terabytes of music that did not count against subscribers' data caps. Now, the carrier is claiming that it is streaming 200 terabytes of music on average every day. At an average of $10 for every 2 gigabytes, that would translate to millions of bucks worth of savings on data fees.
T-Mobile further states it has designed its Music Freedom program to be easy for most consumers to use. If the carrier can indeed convince users of that, we may see a lot of consumers switch from other carriers to T-Mobile, especially those music lovers enamored by what the carrier's Music Freedom program can provide.
As for the music services that sign up for T-Mobile's Music Freedom program, it is possible they are enjoying preferential treatment from the carrier. But, according to its press release, T-Mobile stresses that music service are not required to pay anything to join the Music Freedom program. “No backroom deals … no paid prioritization,” per the press release.
Ever since Music Freedom was launched last summer, the program has been developing quite a following. The number of T-Mobile subscribers who stream music per day has almost tripled in the months following the program's debut. Using the carrier's Data Strong network, customers are have been streaming about 66 million songs each day. That is roughly equivalent to about 200 terabytes of data daily. Even if Music Freedom does offer downloading or video streaming services, it still has proven to be a hit among consumers so far.
