T-Mobile has made several big announcements in July, and before the month ended, we got another significant update from the “Magenta” wireless giant. This time involving another industry veteran, Nokia.
Early in the morning, Neville Ray, CTO for T-Mobile Tweeted “The future of wireless is 5G, and @TMobile is all in on bringing that future to our customers! This $3.5B agreement with @Nokia is an important step toward nationwide 5G. This is great news for my eager team.” As part of the agreement, Nokia will supply T-Mobile with hardware, software, and services that will allow the carrier to provide 5G signals over its 600 MHz low-frequency spectrum and provide enhanced signal service in urban markets using 28 GHz millimeter wave channels.
Ashish Chowdhary, Chief Customer Operations Officer, for Nokia also commented on the announcement and added that, "Nokia and T-Mobile will advance the large-scale deployment of 5G services throughout the United States. This is a testament to our companies' strong and productive working relationship, one which has produced several important technological milestones in recent months, and which now allows us to make 5G a commercial reality."
The two industry leaders have worked together before; however, this is the first time that an agreement of this size was done between the two companies. The deal is especially considered to be a major win for Nokia, as it also struggles to compete against other notable manufacturers like Ericsson and Huawei in the networking equipment space; who are looking for new opportunities to explore, as 4G network growth begins to decrease.
There is undoubtedly a lot of anticipation, but also speculation for what 5G signal will actually do for tech inclined communities, as the current 4G service already seems to be pretty fast. Once 5G is deployed, T-Mobile and Nokia will work together on developing, testing, and implementing next-gen connectivity services that are expected to cover a wide range of industries. Talks about, on-demand virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) experiences, driverless vehicles, medical monitoring, and advanced industrial automation services are some of the areas in which 5G signal could significantly push forth the development and overall experience of these products.
