According to a report recently published by Apple Insider, it seems that a number of familiar apps have been removed from the Apple Watch, including Google Maps, Amazon, eBay, and Target, just to name a few. Because Apple has not confirmed anything yet, nobody knows for sure yet just when these apps were removed. As for Google, it did verify that it had indeed removed support from Google Maps, although the tech giant hinted that it might be for a temporary basis only.
It is not clear yet why several brands have chosen to stop support for their apps on Apple’s smartwatch device, or whether or not the iPhone maker had something to do with it. Still, the company has an upcoming yearly developer conference happening about a month from now, and it is quite possible that it will address this topic. Based on past quarterly earnings reports, Apple has never been one to disclose detailed figures regarding Apple Watch sales.
But as pointed by several industry watchers, this type of scenario is not that surprising -- health and fitness apps generally fare well on wearable devices, but other apps may not, hence the removal of familiar apps even on a smartwatch device as popular as the Apple Watch. When the Apple Watch first hit the market around a couple of years ago, it came with 3,000 apps in various categories, including family, travel, health and fitness, creativity, work, and communications. But considering that people generally still do not see smartwatches as essential tools for everyday use, those apps are often rendered useless, except for a few that choose to use their Apple Watch devices daily.
Meanwhile, leaked images of Fitbit’s new wearable device offering has turned up in the interwebs. First appearing on Yahoo, the images reportedly show a new watch that comes in gold color and sort of looks like an enhanced version of Fitbit’s current Blaze. The device appears to keep the sharp edged aesthetics of past Fitbit watches, with squared off buttons on the side. With regards to features, there is speculation that the new Fitbit offering will come with a global positioning system (GPS) processor, a heart rate monitor, and even contactless payment features, and may be priced at $300.
Apple is said to be readying a new generation Apple Watch in fall later this year. But if its biggest rival, Fitbit, manages to release a new watch a bit earlier, it could make things more challenging for Apple.
