Android is working on a feature known as hibernation. This is being handled by a team at the Android Open Source Project. Through this feature, Android will reduce the memory of apps that are not being used.
According to the reveal, the feature will help free up space on a multi-user device, especially if a single user chooses to hibernate an app. If all the users of the device decide to hibernate the app, then that is a different but interesting story. It is still unclear what the OS will do in such cases.
It’s possible that the app will not be permanently uninstalled. But due to its nature, the app could be compressed in order to save space. If the user later decides to wake up the app from hibernation, the app could be uncompressed.
Right now, the feature is still in the very early stages of its development. But once it gets completed, it will be included in Android 12. There’s no word of an official release date for this software update.
