Apple has just made an important change to its App Store rules.
Previously, subscribers were required to opt-in to a subscription renewal if it comes with a price increase. But now, App Store subscriptions are now allowed to renew monthly even if there are no changes in their pricing.
As explained by PhoneArena, this can be a problem if you don’t really keep track of the subscriptions you are paying every month. So when a subscription has been increased, you may not realize it even if you are already charged for it.
In its announcement, Apple explained:
"Currently, when an auto-renewable subscription price is increased, subscribers must opt in before the price increase is applied. The subscription doesn’t renew at the next billing period for subscribers who didn't opt in to the new price."
Apple hopes that this new decision will help customers stay connected to a subscription. This eliminates accidentally canceling subscriptions and having services interrupted.
Even though this is a new rule that Apple will be implementing, it will not require subscribers to approve an auto-renew subscription that comes with a price hike. Their condition is that the subscription can only be raised once a year. The subscription should also not hike over $5 or 50% of the monthly subscription price.
Apple adds:
"for all subscription price increases that are above the thresholds, exceed the annual limit, or occur within territories where the law requires it, subscribers must opt in before the price increase is applied. The subscription won’t renew at the next billing period for subscribers who didn’t opt in to the new price."
