T-Mobile is about to face tough competition for its 5G network. Although it seems to have dominated the 5G network for a few years, its biggest rivals are quickly catching up to them.
Just last week, Verizon became a serious threat to T-Mobile when it suddenly rolled out its new C-band frequencies. Users said they were surprised by the unexpected speed boost they experienced. And today, it looks like AT&T is catching up as well.
In a CNET report, AT&T was revealed to have gained more 5G spectrum access after a new phase of C-band clearing was completed. Essentially, this meant that the carrier had more C-band spectrum ready to deploy. The report also said that AT&T already started using the new frequencies in 46 locations. Customers in such locations have already been able to experience improved capacity and better speeds.
AT&T currently owns at least “100Mhz of total mid-band spectrum in the contiguous United States and an average of 120Mhz nationwide; that’s bandwidth in every available city, 406 locations in all.”
Fierce Wireless spoke with AT&T and shared part of its conversation:
"In the coming months, markets like Denver and Atlanta will see performance improvements as we continue expanding the deployment of our entire licensed C-band spectrum – an average of 80 MHz or more by market. And because our deployed cell site equipment, such as radios, are capable of handling the full bandwidth spectrum load, once a software update is completed, customers will immediately experience a dramatic increase in bandwidth."
This is promising news for AT&T customers. In the coming months, the wireless carrier aims to roll out the network to more markets. It also shared that its mid-band 5G network already covers over 175 million people.
We’ll have to keep a close eye as AT&T makes more improvements to its network.
