AT&T is embracing the switch to eSIM and looking to this as a way to grow its customer base.
As Fierce Wireless reported, the carrier has given a look into its eSIM technology via its labs in Redmond, Washington. The wireless carrier revealed that this is something they’ve been working on for nearly a decade.
AT&T’s lead eSIM engineers, James Hamilton, said: “We started with the iPads in 2014, and the next big step was probably the Apple Watch. As soon as the iPhones could support it we started that in 2018.”
Even so, carriers did not give much thought to eSIM, not until the iPhone 14 launched s eSIM only.
Jeff Sebastian, another eSIM engineer, gave a look at how AT&T’s eSIM interface can be used in a few clicks. The demo showed how easy it was for customers to use eSIM, whether they’re setting up a brand new phone, transferring from one AT&T device to another, and moving a competitor’s unlocked eSIM device to AT&T. These all took a few minutes to complete.
The demonstrators did not show the process of transferring from AT&T to a rival network. But they promised that it will be as smooth as porting to AT&T’s network.
