It’s rare for people to agree on one thing. But when it comes to robocalls, it looks like everyone shares the same sentiment: We hate it.
And this is what is evidenced today in a new “Anti-Robocall Litigation Task Force” that state Attorney Generals for Indiana, Ohio, and North Carolina have set up. All 50 state Attorneys General have joined this task force, which proves that everyone is against robocalls.
The bipartisan task force is focused on “gateway providers and other entities that are allegedly responsible for a majority of foreign robocall traffic.”
As of this writing, they have already issued civil investigative demands to 20 entities linked to such activities. These gateway providers have a responsibility to ensure foreign traffic is legal. Unfortunately, these entities are not making sufficient action to put an end to robocall traffic. As a matter of fact, it appears that illegal robocall traffic is intentionally being ignored in lieu of steady revenue.
The National Consumer Law Center and Electronic Privacy Information Center has noted that more than 33 million scam robocalls are being made to Americans on a daily basis. These callers include:
Security Administration fraud against seniors
Many other scams
In 2021, an estimated $29.8 billion was stolen by scam callers; most of which originate from overseas. By creating the Task Force, they hope to significantly reduce the number of robocalls that are being received by California’s residents.
