Verizon is gearing up to launch its satellite messaging service. According to its latest announcement, “certain smartphones” will gain access to emergency messaging and location sharing via satellite starting this fall. Customers will gain the ability to send text messages via satellite sometime next year.
Verizon has inked a partnership with Skylo, which is also responsible for the Satellite SOS feature that Google recently rolled out. The good news about this is that it won’t cost extra for customers.
As of this writing, the supported devices are:
Google Pixel 9
Google Pixel 9 Pro
Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold
Google Pixel 9 Pro XL
There are also some other devices that are supported but were not disclosed.
This is still separate from the $100 million that Verizon earlier invested in AST SpaceMobile.
