After the recent ruling from the National Advertising Review Board (NARB) on its “Xfinity 10G network” branding, Comcast has agreed to drop the use of the term “10G” on its marketing materials.
The issue was raised after T-Mobile and AT&T presented the confusion that the term brought about in cellular networks. According to the two, the “G” in 5G refers to “generation,” which is widely used by carriers. Meanwhile in cable companies, this refers to a 10-gigabit network speed.
With Comcast’s use of the term, it gave customers the impression that its speed was “significantly faster” than the current available speeds offered on 5G networks. And in this case, it wasn’t necessarily true.
It also led people to believe that the 10Gbps network speed is a standard on every Xfinity service package. But as noted by Ars Technica, this is only an on-request service for Xfinity Gigabit Pro customers. What’s more is that it requires a fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) connection. This is simply not achievable on standard plans using the regular cables used by Comcast.
As such, the NARB encouraged Comcast to “discontinue its ‘10G’ claims” and even clarify these in a way that does not mislead or provide false information.
Although Comcast “strongly disagrees with the NARB’s analysis and approach,” they have decided to stop using “Xfinity 10G network” term for its network. They continue to have the right to use the “10G” term, only if it is being used accurately.
