The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has just implemented rules that will change how emergency alerts appear on your phone. With these new rules, earlier warnings are replaced with National Alerts. These alerts include non-optional messages and FEMA Administrator alerts for natural disasters and other crises.
Back in March, the agency explained that these new rules allow officials to honor a new requirement for the FEMA alerts without the need to create a new category or even come up with significant technical changes.
Through these new rules, there are lesser chances of a Hawaii-style false emergency alert. In addition to this, each state will be receiving a checklist of information for their own Emergency Alert System plans. There will also be a new FCC process that will review those plans.
Right now, you might still receive new warnings under the old label for Presidential Alert. The change will be reflected once your phone gets a software update.
While this may look like a small change, it possesses a significant effect on alerts in the future.
