The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has set a new deadline for the implementation of its STIR/SHAKEN protocol on some small voice providers. The Commission has pushed up the deadline by a year, after they determined that a high number of robocalls are coming from these providers.
With the announcement, the FCC has moved up the deadline to June 30, 2022 instead of June 30, 2023. While the deadline has been pushed up, it does not necessarily apply to all small voice providers. For one thing, this new deadline is for voice service providers who have 100,000 or fewer subscriber lines.
Additionally, it is only for those that are not facilities-based. And once the Enforcement Bureau finds a small provider is generating illegal robocalls, they will be given only 90 days to implement the STIR/SHAKEN protocols. Other than these, small facilities-based voice providers have up to the end of June 2023 to implement the protocol.
The new ruling covers around 330 or so voice providers.
