The fight against robocallers continues. This time, they are using AI tools in their communications. If you’re tired of blocking these callers but they manage to get through, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has intensified its regulations against AI-using robocallers.
As reported by Android Authority, the regulator is trying to make it mandatory for callers to “explicitly state whether they intend to use AI in their calls and text messages at any point in the future.” The FCC plans to make these disclosures be included in AI-generated calls, which are deemed as “an enhanced risk of fraud and other scams.”
The regulator defined AI-generated calls as:
“An artificial or prerecorded voice or a text using computational technology or other machine learning, including predictive algorithms, and large language models, to process natural language and produce voice or text content to communicate with a called party over an outbound telephone call.”
It’s important to note that the FCC previously banned robocallers from using AI voice cloning tech in phone calls unless prior consent was given and there is an emergency. The only time the use of AI-generated voice software can be exempted is by people with hearing or speech disabilities.
This is still being proposed by the FCC. It is asking for feedback and comments on how this exception can be abused by scammers.
