Recently, there was a news report regarding a finance worker who paid $25 million to fraudsters. Android Authority also points out that President Biden’s voice was recently used to suppress voting in New Hampshire. These are just a few of the many people who were victimized by deepfake technology.
Because of the growing number of such instances, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is doing something to put an end to robocalls that use AI voices.
As reported by TechCrunch, the government agency is proposing making the use of voice cloning AI illegal for robocalls. By enforcing this, the FCC hopes to make it easier to charge those who are running such scams.
As it stands, robocalls can only be deemed illegal if they are proven to break the law. And although the FCC has a prohibition against “artificial” voices, AI-generated voice emulation may not be covered by this prohibition.
If the FCC is successful in its new plans, they’ll be able to include AI voice cloning under the Telephone Consumer Protection Act. And in this way, they can determine whether a law is being broken.
Hopefully, they find a way to address this since it’s a huge problem for everyone in the future.
