Google Fi subscribers will soon be getting end-to-end encryption with their service.
Earlier today, the MVNO revealed the big news: they will be rolling out support for end-to-end encryption to Android devices in the coming weeks. The good news is that you don’t have to install anything. Once the feature becomes available, your calls to another Fi subscriber will automatically be encrypted.
You’ll know that you are making an encrypted call when you see a special audio and visual cue that Google has added to the phone app. Your screen will show a lock icon as you try to get connected to the other Fi subscriber. This lock icon will continue staying on your screen throughout the call. In addition to this, you will hear a different ringtone.
This is a much welcomed feature, especially for customers who value their privacy and security. Unfortunately, the feature will only be available on Fi subscribers using an Android device. This means that your calls to other networks won’t be covered by the encryption feature.
