Google is rolling out a helpful update to its Messages app, making it easier for users to identify which contacts are using RCS (Rich Communication Services). This new feature introduces an "RCS" badge next to the names of contacts who have RCS enabled, streamlining the process of starting enhanced chats.
Previously, determining if a contact supported RCS required initiating a conversation and checking the message type. Now, as reported by Android Authority, the latest beta version of Google Messages displays these badges directly in the contact list when you tap the "Start chat" button. This allows users to see at a glance who supports RCS without opening individual chats.
In addition to the badges, Google Messages is also introducing subtle color changes to contact names, utilizing Material You pastel colors for RCS-enabled users. This visual cue further distinguishes RCS users from those on standard SMS/MMS, enhancing the user experience.
These updates are currently available in the beta version of the app and are expected to roll out to all users soon. With these enhancements, Google continues to improve the messaging experience, making it more intuitive and user-friendly.
