Over the weekend, Verizon Wireless customers were the target of a new phishing attack. According to PhoneArena, Verizon customers received unsolicited text messages from a bogus number with a link to a phishing site.
The text message reads:
“Verizon Free Msg: Sept bill is paid. Thanks, (first name of the customer)! Here’s a little gift for you.”
The message is then followed by a link that leads to a site asking for your name, address, phone number, social security number, and other personal information. Whatever you do, don’t click on the link or enter your information on these fields. Otherwise, you could lose control over your Verizon account since this is the type of information that Big Red usually asks to change a person’s account.
This is obviously a phishing attack since Verizon does not send out a “gift” to customers who pay their bills early or on time. And most especially, Verizon does not need to get this information from you when they have your file on hand.
Either way, if you are unsure if a text or email is genuine, it’s best to call your carrier and ask for authentication. This is the best way you can avoid falling victim to such scams.
