A new WhatsApp scam is looming around and it poses a huge security threat to its victims.
As revealed by contextual AI company CloudSEk, the scammers call potential victims and ask them to dial a certain number. Once they follow this, their WhatsApp account is already accessed by the hacker.
The company, specializes in predicting cyber threats, revealed that a caller will ask you to dial a 10-digit number that usually starts with **67* or *405*. Because these numbers are so commonly used by carriers throughout the world, they can easily lead a victim to dial the number.
And once you dial that number, the hacker will be able to get hold of your WhatsApp account right away. In exchange for your personal information, they will usually extort you for money.
In order to protect yourself against this scam, the best thing you can do is turn on 2-step verification on your WhatsApp account. You should also create a PIN or password to use when you log in.
Next, you should always be careful of anyone who tells you to dial an unknown number. This is particularly true if the person who tells you to do this is someone you don’t know.
There are plenty of other scams similar to this and it doesn’t only involve WhatsApp. Be careful so you don’t get tricked into losing your personal information.
