Uh-oh! It looks like Verizon Wireless is coming for T-Mobile in terms of its 5G lead. This comes after Ookla’s latest discovery based on the millions of people who use its Speedtest feature on a daily basis.
As reported by Phone Arena, Ookla was able to notice that a huge chunk of Verizon customers recently used their app to check their data speeds. This is right after AT&T and Verizon rolled out their 5G C-band spectrum. And true enough, Verizon’s 5G speeds appear to be improving thanks to the recent rollout.
The rollout, although delayed, seems to have made a huge impact on Verizon’s network. Ookla noted that there has been a 50% increase in 5G download data speed compared to the week after its launch. As a result, Big Red obtained a median 5G download speed increase of 116.29 Mbps from 76.51 Mbps. This has also prompted Verizon users to see the 5GUW icon on their devices’ status bars.
“However, if the trend in increased speed continues, Verizon Wireless could challenge T-Mobile for fastest download speed in our next Speedtest Global Index Market Analysis.”
This is exactly why Ookla believes it’s best to wait a full quarter prior to releasing a report. We’ll have to wait until Ookla releases its next report to see if T-Mobile is in danger of losing its 5G lead.
