With the number of SIM swap attacks happening, T-Mobile has created its Port Out Protection to prevent unauthorized individuals from moving T-Mobile numbers to another wireless provider. Through this, the Un-carrier has been able to protect its users from fraudulent individuals who take over an account, change the connected passwords, and dry up their financial apps. While this has been a helpful security feature that T-Mobile has offered, there seems to be an issue with the tool.
As shared on Reddit, a user claims “T-Mobile’s ‘Port Out Protection’ is broken and cannot be removed from some accounts.” PhoneArena says the issue requires users to remove the tool to successfully move their number to a new provider. But with the issue, T-Mobile users are being prevented from disabling this feature.
Some users on Reddit pointed out how this seemed like their accounts were being “hostaged” while the Port Out Protection bug has been fixed. Users can opt to close their T-Mobile account before they switch. Unfortunately, they won’t be able to bring their current number.
The report shared that the Redditor spoke to a 2nd Level Port Support, who informed him that the tool is broken. Even with the tool switched off, they won’t be able to port over their numbers.
