Samsung is getting ready to unveil its Galaxy S22 series in a few days. And while the Galaxy S22 is a much anticipated device, there’s one vital piece of information that has gotten individuals even more excited to see it.
On Sunday, the smartphone manufacturer revealed that it has started utilizing ocean-bound plastic repurposed from old fishing nets. And surprise, surprise! This new sustainable material will be used in its latest devices.
As shared by the company, the material will first be used by the products it will announce this week. Eventually, the South Korean manufacturer plans to use the material throughout the entire device lineup.
Samsung shares that the public’s focus is mostly on plastic bottles and grocery bags that are causing the collection of ocean debri. But for the smartphone manufacturer, it is more concerned with microplastics and discarded nets.
According to marine biologists, these discarded fishing gear continue to trap and kill marine life. And with over 640,000 tons of fishing nets being discarded annually, this will only continue to add to the problem of ghost fishing.
And true enough, Samsung is stepping up to do its part in getting rid of this problem. But they aren’t the only ones in the tech industry to commit to this. In September, Microsoft revealed the Ocean Plastic Mouse, which is made from 20 percent recovered plastic.
This initiative by Samsung follows through with their pledge to start using more sustainable materials in its packaging back in 2019. You can read more about their announcement here.
