Back in January, T-Mobile revealed to its customers that it had discovered a security breach that happened on the first few days of the year. While T-Mobile reported that its customers’ financial details were not accessed in the hack, there is one Google Fi customer who briefly lost his phone number, giving the bad actor a chance to make password reset requests. But as it turns out, this customer isn’t the only one who experienced a more serious attack.
9to5Google reported that the same issue happened to a number of Mint Mobile customers. These customers also momentarily lost their phone numbers and had password reset requests done on behalf of them. The attack also happened around the same timeframe as Google Fi.
On Reddit, there have been at least five separate customers who shared their hijacking experience between late December and early January. These users would first lose cell coverage and receive an email notification that their Coinbase accounts were compromised.
Unfortunately, the affected Mint Mobile customers weren’t able to regain control over their accounts in time. And as a result, a number of users lost thousands of dollars, with one user claiming to have lost $15,000 in cryptocurrency.
What’s similar between the Google Fi and Mint Mobile customers is that their Coinbase accounts were targeted in the attack. Both are also MVNOs operating on T-Mobile’s networks.
Mint Mobile has not yet responded to these reports.
